The monthly m,3ting of tbo Beard of Education wss held on Thursday. Present: Mr S. W. Goldtmith (chairman), Revs G. Barclay, T. Jasper Smyth, Messrs J. Jaokton, W. B. Howell. J. Talbot, and E. A. Barker, The chairman stated that since If t mee ng no appointments bad been made. The resignations had been received of Mr J. Mclcod, Opihi ; Miss Bennett, eigh b fxsher at Timaru ; Mica Jefcoate, sole teacher at Adair. The repairs at St Andrews hri been completed saf'sfacco.lly. Inere wore eighteen candidates for the bos I’a scholarships ex-
amination. Some correspondence was reoieved from the Government respecting the conditions of sale of the Geraldine section. The Colonial Secretary considered that the sale should be for cash. The inspector reported upon the examination of the following schools as under: — Timaru Main—Pipers in Standard VII remarkably good, school maintains its salnfaotoiy position j percentage of pastes 55, failures 10; class subjects, 74; cddilional subjects, 89, Hook —Percentage of passes, 39; failures 31. Winchester —P...ses, 53; fazures, 15. Waitohi Elat Passes, 53; failures, 18 ; Prngitira Valley—Pastes, 22 ; failures, 63. Milford—Prises, 30 ; failures, 47. Upper Otaio—Paises, 50; failures, 10, Waihoa Parses, 55; fai'ures, 7. South Orari—Pasieo, 47; failures, 4. Timaru Side School—Passes, 42; failures, 8. In reply to a question from the Eov. Mr Barclay, the inspector stated that scholars in seventh standard ware only examined in sixth work, additional subjsoti being optional. It was ie. cried that the membors of the board to retire in Mrch next were Messrs Smyth, Howell and Barker, who wore eligible for re-election. —Committees to be notified,
It was decided to ckse the office from December 20th to January 3rd for the Christmas holiday*, and to postpone the January meeting of the board from the first to the third Thursday. Mr Talbot was allowed another month to report on the question of removing Mou it Gay school. It was decided to call for applications for the mastership of the Burkes Pass school. The Gave Committee accepted the board’s offer of £8 for fencing —The board understand the committee provides a similar amount.
The Opihi committee asked for £3 to repair the water-tank, and inquired if the board would provide a locum tenem, recommending Miss Moßeath,—The committee wen recommended to close the school for the Christmas holidays, and the application for aid was referred to building committee. The Temuka committee wrote explaining that Mr Cross’ (the second mailer’s) leave of absence bed expired, and owing to ill health was not able to rrsume his duties. —Eeiolved that the board ascertain by direct inquiry the state of health of Mr Cross, expressing regret at his continued illness, and taire such steps as may be suggested by the reply. Ur Wo >d, headmaster of Timaru school, was grrnted six months’ leave of absence on account of ill-health. The Waitohi Mat Committee wrote regarding the appointment of a teacher, and after considering the matter in committie it was decided to advertise again. Mr B. Smith on behalf of the Winchester English Church Vestry offering £l6 for blaf the acre section on which the maitir’s house stand*, for the purpose of erecting a Sunday school upon it. Mr Barclay, who had baen requested to report, repotted adversely ; but mo ved, and it was eirrki, that the committee be consulted.
Applications from Fairview, Hook, Waimate, end Winchester, for repairs, etc,, were referred to the building cimmitte?. The Bov. Mr Barclay brought up the Building Committee’* repoii. Ho eta'id that they were never in a worse position than now. £450 was all that returned tt meet all claims for repairs fo? the whole din' lot. The totr 1 grant w&a £BOO, but £”?9 h i becu swept away by repairs rendered necessary through the late gale. Oa the motion of the Eav. Mr Barclay seconded by Mr J: ok*on, it wa» resolved—- “ That the Hakateramea school bs built; that a sum of £4O ba granted ' o Timaru to do the best withj and that the building committee further report on the possible allocations; the secretary moke to the Government direct the strongest representations regarding the necessary works, such as Seadown, Arundel, painting, &o, Other mat* ars javing been dealt with, the meeting terminated.
