Mr J. C. Firth, of Auckland, was presented by his late employees with a shield of their photographs on Friday. In replying Mr Firth said that, whilst he had lost all his property, he was satisfied so long as it was not through his own fault. Sew Hoy's dredge at Arthur's Point, Shotover, got 29 ounces in one day's work. The whole available dredging area on the river is takea up. The excitement in connection with the Nenthorne reefs iB increasing. The Victoria Company has been fully subscribed, and the Eureka's list is nearly half filled. Efforts are being made to secure a post office and telephone bureau. There is sure to be a large number on the ground on the spring weather setting in. The train leaving Wanganui at 4.45 on Friday afternoon ran over a man at Turakina platform. It is supposed that he was lying across the rails in a drunken state. He was picked up ten minuses after the train passed, and it was found that the lower part of both legs had been cut off.
