Tem¥ka Public School.—The raidwinter holidays commenced at thelemuka Public School on Friday last. The Zealandia Rink.—ln consequence of the Temuka Caledonian's Social Gathering Inking place in the TernuKa Drill Shed this evening, the Zealandia Rink will be closed this afternoon and evening. Accident.—Mr Gordon Wood met with an accident in the hunting field on Saturlast, the meet being at Coonoor. He was thrown,with the result thathe was severely shaken and had one of his fingers broken.

The Midland Railway.—The lender of Joseph Jay und Company, of Greymoutb, at £22,489 7s 3d, for the Ahaura section of the Midland Railway, will be acoepted. There were eleven tenders, and the highest was £32,106 4s. Geraldine Stock Sale.—The fortnightly sale of stock at Gt>raldino takes place to-morrow. Messrs J, Mundell and Co.,'.Messrs Webster and Macdonald, and Messrs Gray and Montgomery advertise entries,

Till Robbing.—A man named Martin O'Halloran was caught by the barmaid of the Grosvenor Hotel, Tiinaru, Miss Brady, robbing the till on .Friday evening. Hi 3 ill-gotten aaius were taken from him, and he was handed over to the police.

Lecture. —Mr John Aitken, of the Geraldine school, delivered a lecture on house illumination and ventilation in the Oddfellows' 'Hall, Teuinlca, last evening. There was a good attendance. Co. are the Geraldine agents, will be held on Mr A. McKenzie'a farm, Geraldine Road, to-morrow, commencing at 10 a.m. Accident,—A litt'e girl named Maggie Morrison had her arm broken ht the Columbia Kink, Geraldine, on Friday evening last. While skating before the commencement of the polo match sbe happened to f*ll, a not uncommon occurrence with skaters, and thereby broke her left arm clone to the wrist. The limb was set by Dr Fish and the patient is now i doiog well. Smoke Concert.—Mr J. C. Binskin, of Ornri, who is about to leave the district to take up bis abode in Timaru, where he intends to stait in business, will be tendered a Bmoke concert at the Wolseley Hotel, Winchester, this evening. Since his arrival in the Orari district Mr Binskin has dene his utmost to promote its interests, and no doubt his friends and, wellwishers will attend in force this evening to bid hies a cordial farewell. Dbstitute Children. Thn four youngest children of Mrs Uprichard, a widow of Temuka, were Rent by Constable Morton to Timaru yesterday, where they will come before the authorities under the Destitute Persons Act. Two charitable neighbors undertook to provide for two older oues, Mrs€ prichard left her home some few weeks ago and bus not since been heard of. The children have been existing partly on relief afforded by the Charitable Aid Board, and partly by assistance from neighbors and friends.

Draughts.—A draughts match between the Tiuiaru and Temuka Draughts Oluba has been arranged to take place in Timaru on Tuesday next. The following are the representatives chosen :—Timaru : Messrs Napier, Shaw, Steward, Moller, Austin, Scarf, Elgin, Macdonald, Harney, Stokes, C. N. Macintosh and Sergeant-Major Mason. Narrow Escape.—A small boy narrowly escaped a serious, if not a fatal, accident in Temuka on Saturday last. With a number of other children he was riding on one of the trucks drawn by Messrs Hayhurst and Uo.'s tnction engine, and in getting off fell. Luckily he was almost in the centre of the truck, and though the following truck passed over him he was clear of trio wheels and eHcaped unhurt. Parents ought to warn their children against the practice of riding on these trucks, as if tbey persist in it a serious accident is almost certain to result sooner or later.

Sporting.—Final payments for the Grand National Steeplechase were received at Christohurch on Saturday night, as follows : Chemist, Irish King, Orient, Torrent, Ahua, Orangeman, Secretary, Presto, Monteagle, Daddy Longlegs, Panic (including penalty), Gunpowder, Louis, Waitangi.—At tha Victorian Racing Club'a Grand National Steepleohase Meeting at Melbourne on Saturday the Grand National Hurdle Race, a Sweepstake of 20 sovs, with 1000 sots added, about 3 miles, resulted as follow*:—Redleap, Get 81b, 1; Coryphus, list 2lb, 2; Tb.9> Rhymer, lOsfc 31b, 3 j Seventeen horses started. Time—smin 54seo. Alarm of Fire in Temuka.— One of

the chimneys of the Temuka Hotel caught fire about a quarter to ten yesterday morning, and was the cause of considerable commotion. The fire bell was rung, and in a very few minutes the fire brigade with their engine were on the spot. The latter was not made use of, but the brigade took prompt measures and the fird was soon extinguished,not the slightest damage being done. It may be mentioned that Mr E. Smith was the first at the brigade station with a horse for the purpose of drawing the engine to the fire, and thus becomes entitled to the brigade's standing reward of 10s.

Evictions™ Southland.—On Wednesday last Mrs Cassidy, wboie husband was drowned last year, and T. Clifford, were eyioted from holdings at Wray's bush, Southland, by a posse of police under Sergeant-Major fiamsny, and a> number of bailiffs. In osch case the bailiffs read a warrant, and this being unheeded the doors were burst open and the inmates turned out with their scant belongings. The evictions were carried out under the instructions of the Otago and Southland Investment Company. The mother of Mrs Cassidy, aged eighty years, who has spent nearly all her life in the colonies, and over thirty years h tho district, was dancing round the policemen and bailiffs yelling out " Thank God I have lived to see a real Irish, eviotioa." The evictions were due to failure to pay rent.

I A Dastardly Tsick.—On Saturday night som» evil disposed person or persons perpetrated an act which might have caused a serious accident. During the day previous Mr W. Hayhurst had been ploughing some land adjoining the Milfcrd road between Mr S. Ashwella and the cemetery. On knocking off work he left his double-furrow plough on the land, and the implement was deliberately dragged on to 'the een're of the rpad and there left. Luckily the night was light and tho plough was noticed by a pasaioa pedestrian, who, after a great deal of trouble,managed to remove it. The road is one of the most frequented in the district, and had any one been driving along it before tha plough was removed there is little doubt but that a serious accident would have happened. The individuals who could design and parry out sucji an act deserve the most severe punishment.

RINKING.—A polo untch on skates took plact at th« Columbia Kink, Goraldina, on Friday evening hat botween a team from Tediuka mid one from Uaraldine. There whs a large attendance of onlookers who appeared to eujoy the fun greatly. The following wore the players :—T«muka : Findlay (cnptaio), Clinch (2), flay (3), and Russell; Gsrsldine :T. Sherratt (captain), Kruse, Millord, Morrison, JKlrskinß, Harding, and Flemming. A good game resulted in a win for the home team by 4 points io 2. The following player* obtained the goals for Geraldine : Morrison 1, Harding 2, Erakine 1; Teniuka : Find lay 1, &. ttay 1. Friday evening was the closing night at the rink, the patronage accorded not being sufficient to warrant a continuance of the season. Temuka Daibt Factory.—The monthly meeting of the directors of the Temuka Dairy Company was held «n Friday. Present —Meßsrs Brown (ehairman), Scott, and Mason. Particulars of tinsmith's work roquirad at the factory ware received from the manager, also an offor from Mr James Dtincat), to complete the same for £7 12a. The offer was aooepted. The secretary submitted a list showing.the comparative cost of dairy requisites imported direct, as against their purchase in the colony, the comparison being largely in favor of direct importation. An ordsr was drafted to be forwarded at once. Acoounts amounting to £29 _Bs 2d were passed for payment. It was deoided to reduce the amount of insurance on the building. Several sales of oheeso at satisfactory prices were reported.
