TIMARU LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The annual meeting of the Timaru Licensing committee was held yesterday. All the licenses of the different hotels in the town were grunted with the exception of Melville Hotel, which was refused to . the present applicant. Inspector Thomson jappeared to oppose, on the ground that, “ the applicant was of bad fame and character,” The ground of objection war a row which took place in the hotel. The licensee Mr Twentyraan Wilson, at first charged a constable with being mixed up in the row, and afterwards, when the constable was chargsd at the R.M. Court with the offence, swore this statement was untrue. In giving judgment the Chairman said the committee were unanimous in deciding to refuse the license to the applicant. They had never had so bid a case before them. The applicant had, by his own admission, made a statement for the purpose of iojuting a constable, and he committee considered that a person who could make snob a statement was not fit to hold a license. Upon that ground, not upon anything in the conduct of the bouse, as that gamb ing had been per* tnitted, they declined to grant the application. They did not, however, desire to injure the applicant beyond that, and wejjp® piopared to give an aijournment days, to allow him time to sell his interest in the house, or for the owner to got ' another tenant.
