M, Court, Timarw. - At this Court yeaierday a laboring man named Thomas Rooney was remanded to Oamaru, on a chaige of forging and uttering an order for the payment of money on the 2nd April. Joseph CLpaiick, charged with stealing on May 3let, an overcoat value 30«, the property of Ciarlea Looker, from Watt’s boarding house, pleaded not guilty and applied for a remand, which was granted. He will be brought up again to-day, Leotubb,—A very interesting lecture on the South Sea Islands and New Quines, was delivered in the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, last night, by the Rev. Mr Blake. The lecturer was apparently thoroughly conversant with his subject, and managed to keep a fairly large audience interested throughout. The lecture was illustrated by diagrams and maps, the work of the lecturer. No charge was made for admission, but a collection was taken up in aid of the Sabbath school prize fund. A further report will appear in our next issue. The Paxnb Family.— The Payne Family gave one of tbeir entertainments in the Geraldine Volunteer Hall on Monday evening, before one of the largest audiences ever seen in the district. A number of seals from the Oddfellows’ were used to supplement the large seating accommodation of the hall, and yet many of those present had to stand. A programme similar to that given at Temuka was gone through, and it is needless to say that the high expectations of the audience were fully realised. Mr Payne intimated that the family would again visit Geraldine in the course of a few months. Siloook v. Gebaldine County Council. —This case was continued at the Supreme Court, Timaru (before His Honor Mr Justice Dennistoun and a special jury) on Monday. The whole day was occupied in taking the evidence of Messrs Meason and Marchant, engineers to the County Council. On Tuesday the case was concluded. James Radford, clerk of works, gave evidence, and counsel addressed the court at some length. After a short retirement the jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £466 10s 6d, this being contingent on the result of the argument which is to bo taken in Christchurch on the question of penalties and other law points. The claim was for £75412s sd, and the penalties claimed amount to £267 18s 61. The amount of Silcock’s tender for the work was £Boll3s Id, and the amount he has received £741 0s sd. Litbbaby Society. A well attended meeting was held at the Presbyterian church on Monday evening for the purpose of discussing the advisability of forming a mutual improvement and debating society. The Rev. J. Dickson occupied the chair, and enlarged upon the advantages of snob societies. It was resolved that a society be established, to be called the Temuka Literary Association ; its objects to be the reading and discussing of essays, general debates, and the general literary improvement of members. The Rev. Mr Dickson was elected presideqt, and Mr W. Bryars, 8.A., vice-president. Messrs I. Smith, Montgomery, Storey, Darrook, McCaskill and H. Cross, were elected a committee of management. Mr W. Cooper was appointed secretary, and Mr Montgomery Treasurer. The fee for admission was fixed at 2s 6d for gentlemen and Is for ladies. Further details were left to the committee. The new society has been started under favorable auspices and promises to be successful. Tbmuea Dbamatio Sooibtt.—ln or; advertising columns will be found the programme of the approaching entertainment to be given by the members of the Temuka Amateur Dramatic Society. A glance at it will show that it possesses the merit of being unique, the various items being not only new to Temuka audiences, but serving to introduce a fair proportion of fresh local talent. The more familiar names are already associated with success, and there can be little doubt that the entertainment will prove most enjoyable. Mrs Foster will accompany the singers, and the society in securing the services of a lady of such nigh musical ability bap shown a vyise discretion, Mr Wood, who aesists her in the opening overture ‘Zimpa,’ is already favorably known to Temuka audiences. The company have practiced assiduously, and judging from their rehearsals should be able to render a good account of themselves. The object for which they are working is n laudable one. All profits are to be devoted to charitable objects, and-we understand the members of the society are rlad£ ttfglye their seryioes in aid bf the principal local or neighboring institutions as far as they peisibly can. Under the circumstances they should be favored with a large attendance.
