AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the above board took place last night. Present —Messrs E. Lee (chairman), A. Brew, E. Tallender, J. T. M. Hayhurst, and J. Ashwell. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were redd and confirmed. CORRESIONDENCB. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows’: J '-ifom the Property Tax Commissioner, bearing date April 10 > a^ lsl . n S the board that the Crown and -Native Lands Rating Acts Repeal Act, 1888, provides for the payment of only half rates for 1888-9, and quarter rates for the current year, except in fP oCial instances, and stating that the demand for rates should be accompanied by a copy of resolution levying the rate.—The matter had received attenIVom the same, under date April 26, advising that a voucher for £3 4s Bd, being half rates on Crown lands, bad been sent to the Treasury for payment. ... Rrom the clerk to the Geraldine County Council, advising that the board’s share ■of contribution to charitable aid amounted to £lO 6s 9d, and requesting that half this sum, £5 3s sd, might be paid to the credit of the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board account at the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, on or the Ist June, 1889.—Passed for payment. Prom the Treasury Department, advising that the sum of £8 2s lOd, for thirds of receipts on deferred payment land detailed in schedule attached, had been remitted to the credit of the board at the Bank of New Zealand, Temnka. Prom the Sydenham Borough Council, soliciting the co-operation of the board in endeavoring to, get the Government to give effect to the following resolution of the council u That in the opinion of this council, it is desirable, in the interests of the ratepayers, that the Government should endeavor to pass, during next session of Parliament, a Ratepayers Mutual Insurance Bill, empowering local bodies, upon the security of their rates, to agaipst loss by fire the properties within their respective boundaries.” —Received. Prom the National Eire Insurance Company, advising that the premium of insurance on policy 63477 (board s cottages) was due on April 25th. Prom Mr Geo. Hobbs, requesting permission to transfer leases of sections 758 and 760 to J. G. Proudlock and James Watt, respectively. Agreed to, subject to payment of Arrears of rent. ■ T>TP'arVt? f T

The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows: — “ Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report that daring the past month one man has been employed two days and seven hours at surface work. In accordance with instructions tenders were invited for cutting water-tables and crossings, and carting clay. Two tenders were received and submitted to the chairman. That of E. Lavery was accepted at 2s ■ 6d per chain for water tables, 3s for crossings, and lOd per yard for clay within ten chains, and Is 3d per chain over that distance. As instructed, I arranged for cleaning portion of creek,'viz., that by reserve leased by Mr Washington. In all 36 chains have been cut, and a very satisfactery job has been made. # During next month 1 purpose, subject to approval, to have the North Town Belt repaired, as it is becoming broken by heavy dray work. It will be necessary shortly to have some of the watertables cleaned out, and I would suggest that this be done prior to wet weather setting in. “A.W. Gaze, I "Overseer.” The chairman’s action re letting of tenders was confirmed ; the arrangement made by the overseer re creek cleaning was confirmed ; the overseer { was instructed to report upon repairs' required on North -Town Belt at the )next meeting of the board. The overseer verbally reported upon the condition of the fences upon the board’s reserves, and was requested to write to certain tenants, drawing their attention to the fact that their fences were not in accordance with agreement, and to request them to erect suitable ones at once. INTEBTIEW. MrsUprichard waited upon theboard, and stated that she was totally unable to pay the rent of cottage now due. She was only in receipt of a small number of rations monthly, and was unable to procure work t© supplement this, tihe had tried to procure other premises, but without success. She asked the Board to recommend her case to the Charitable Aid Board, with the view of arranging for the payment of rent.-—The Board could not see its way to make such a recommendation, They desired the .cottage to be vacated at once, but would allow the applicant time to interview the Charitable Board. the cottages. Accounts amounting to £l2 3s 4d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
GERALDINE TOWN BOARD. * The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday evening lastPresent— Messrs W. S. Maslin (chairman), R. Taylor, A. White, N. Dunlop, J. Williams, A. Sherratt, and J. Mundell: MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved of. Inward was read and dealt with as follows Prom the Clerk to the Sydenham Borough Council, re insuranco for the benefit of ratepayers. —Received. Prom Messrs Meason and Marchant, with regard to land of Messrs Brown and Studholme abutting on the race,—The Chairman explained the matter to the Board, and they instructed the Clerk to reply. Prom the Chief Commissioner, re tracing of water-race. Prom the Colonial Secretary, re cherry plum trees for fencing reserves. Prom the Property Tax Commissioner, re sections passed from the Crown.
Prom Mr Brown, re water-race. — The Clerk to reply again, Prom the Steward Timaru Hospital, forwarding names of persons residing in the district who had received treatment in the hospital for past month. Prom the Charitable Aid Board, intimating that the Board’s share for half year’s contribution to their Board was £8 14s Bd. BUILDING REGULATIONS. The Clerk laid on the table tracing of building erected by Mr Baker next Masonic Hall.—ln reply to a question put, the Clerk stated that Mr Baker had sent in no application regarding same.—lt was resolved on the motion os Mr Mundell, seconded by Mr Taylor—“ That the building Mr Baker is erecting in Talbot Street must be in accordance with the by-laws.” THE WATER-SUPPLY. In regard to the water-race and Mr Studholme’s land, the Chairman stated what Mr H. B, Webster (agent for Mr Studholme) had agreed to accept in regard to the land required for waterrace. —It was decided that the Chairman shovld consult the Board’s solicitor on the matter, and if satisfactory to instruct him to prepare an agreement; also that he deal with Mr Brown in regard to his land. Resolved—“ That a sub-committee be appointed, to consist of Messrs Mundell, Sberratt, White, and the chairman to arrange for the cutting o£ the race through Messrs Morrison and Williams’ sections.” overseer’s report. The overseer’s report was read, dealing with the work of the past month, - and needed no comment from the board. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened: Por lighting lamps for twelve months—L. Newport, £4B; 0. Groves, £49 10s; J Clancy, £45 (informal). The tender of C. Groves was accepted. APPLICATIONS. Twelve applications were received for the post of working overseer, The board went into committee to consider the matter. It was decided after much discussion that Mr R. Annan be appointed. For the post of clerk there were three applications. Mr H. N. Hiskens was appointed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £39 3s lOd were passed for payment. miscellaneous. The ranger’s report was read and approved. Mr C. E. Sherratt requested the hire of roller and use of part of road for mixing asphalt.—The request was granted. The meeting then adjourned till Monday evening next, at 7.30 p.m.
