IRISH AFFAIRS.
London, May 2. Mr Balfour, Secretary for Ireland, speaking at Manchester, said the storm of revolution in Ireland was abating, and a social calm was likely to descend ou the faco of society. A number of noblemen and gentry hayo subscribed £IO,OOO to place settlers on farms of the Scottish tenants in Ulster who have been boycotted. It is rumored that the office of Viceroy of Ireland, which will shortly become vacant in consequence of the intended resignation -,of the Marquis of Londonderry, will be abolished under the new Irish local Government scheme, and that upon the resignation of the present holder the office will be administered by a Commission, uutil the scheme to be submitted by the Government is dealt with by Parliament. May 3. The sentences of imprisonment on Dr Tanner, Mr J. O'Connor »Dd Mr Condon, M.P.'s, have been confirmed on appeal. It is expected that the proposal to confer the freedom of the City of Edinburgh on Mr Paraell will be dropped in view of the result of the recent plebiscite. Mr Charles A. V. Coneybeore, M.P. for Camborne, Cornwall, has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for inciting his Fallcarragh tenantry to support the plan of campaign.
