A bouse in Summer street, Auckland, owned by Savory and occupied! by Ford, was destroyed by fire at 2 a.m. yesterday. The adjoining bouse was damaged. J. Oram Sheppard, formerly manager of the City Hotel, was committed for trial at Christchurch, on Monday, on a charge of misappropriating a promissory note given by N. N. Newby. Thomas Farrell* fireman on board the Arawa, died in the Lyttelton casual ward on Sunday morning from injuries caused by accidentally falling down the hold during the passaga from Wellington. Tbe Cyclists Alliance has decided to allocate the championship events for tbe ensuing season as follows :—One mile, Christchurch; 5 rules, Dunedin ; 10 miles, Christchurch ; 25 miles, Auckland, A child, two years old, the daughter of P. Todd, surveyor, while at a picnic at Tekaka, Nelson, was missed, and on search being made was found drowned on a snag a quarter of a mile down the river.

A man named Sikes died at Westport on Saturday in the hospital. He had accidentally injured his foot on a locomotiue a week previously, and erysipelas set in. Deceased was formerly a contractor in Nelson and elsewhere.

Tbe resolution passed by the Auckland City Council a short time ago to dispense with the services of the stone-breakers is being rescinded, and tbe men are to be retained at tbe rate of 3s 3d per yard instead of 3s fid as formerly.

The Supreme Court, New Plymouth, is now engaged with the civil case, Bev. S. Breach v. Victorian Insurance Company. The plaintiff sues for insurance money on the Scotch Kirk, which was burnt down in August, 1882, The body of Willism Blewden was found in the Wellington harbour about half-past four yesterday morning. Two letters, one unopened, addressed Thomas Blewden, contractor, Union or Cook street, Auckland, were found in a pocket.

The motions submitted to the Auckland Board of Education some t'tne ago by Mr Theo. Cooper, proposing retrenchment in primary education to the extent of £75,000 per annum, were again discussed by the Board on Friday, and referred to a committee who will report on tbe subject as early as possible. Tbe Otago Daily Times has received a telegram announcing that Messrs T. Mackenzie, Billens, 0. McKinnon, and F. Muir have arrived at Lumsden, having performed tbe overland journey from Milford Sound to Lake Te Anau. Tbe overland route to Milford Sound and Sutherland Falls will be practicable in summer when the track has been cut.

On Saturday afternoon Wm, McLauchian, residing at St. John’s Wood, Northeast Valley, Dunedin, committed suicide by hanging himself while his wife was absent. He appears to have thrown a rope over the parlour door, and making a noose on the other side hanged himself. He was in very well-to do circumstances, having a good deal of property at Port Chalmers, but he had suffered some losses and they had worried him greatly. He leaves a wife and three children.

A Maori is ip tbe hospital at Auckland in a critical state, the result of injuries sustained by him while a prisoner in the Mount Eden gaol. He bad a quarrel with a fellow prisoner, Arthur Kirk, while stone-breaking, and tbe latter pursued tbe Maori into the quarry, causing rupture, Kirk was sentenced by the gaol authorities to seven days’ confinement on broad and water for the offence.

Tbe dead body of a child was found on tbe beach near Judge’s Bay, Parnell, Auckland, on Saturday afternoon. Tbe body was clothed in two calico gowns, wrapped in a woman’s petticoat and tied man old sugar bag. The body bad evidently been in the water some time, as decomposition had set in. Apparently it had been buffetted by the tide, as it wae found at high water mark. There is no clue to the parents.

The buperintendent at Wakapuaka wires that Port Darwin spoke the repairing steamer on Sunday on the 1871 cable. Until then she was unaware of a break in the new cable. Later infoima tion from the ship states she had commenced to pay out towards tha buoy on the Bangoewangi end, which she expected to reach about 4 on Monday afternoon, bhe has 110 knots of new patent cable lo pay out, which will complete the renewal of the 1871 cable. The splice was lot go in 1275 fathoms. The temperature of the sea at tbs bottom was 36 deg. Fahrenheit.
