ALLEGED ARSON.
Long was brought up at the R.M. Court, Blenheim, yesterday, charged with wilfully setting fire to a four roomed house on Wednesday last. He is the hero of the “ gagged and bound” story. Mr Rogers prosecuted on behalf of the Insurance Company, and asked for a remand for eight days, on the ground that many additional circumstances had come to light. The Court was densely crowded, and the gallery was full of females. The accused is a well-sized dark man, with a peculiar mingling of intelligence and vacancy in his face. The evidence of a neighbor’s son showed that after the fire the accused sent by him a note to a draper, and asked the draper not to tell the police what he had bought at the shop. Sergeant Scanlan. gave evidence of the circumstances attending the fire, and the contradictory statements made by the accused. A remand was granted to Monday next. ,
