A MURDEROUS ASSAULT.
Auckland, July 18. A murderous outrage was committed in Mount Eden prison yesterday afternoon. A prisoner named Jno, Brown, undergoing a sentence of seven years for shooting a man in Elliot street, was at work with other prisoners on the new prison building under Warder Rutherford, who acted as foreman. Brown, without any provocation made a sudden rush at Rutherford, striking him on the forehead with a hammer with which the convict had been working. Rutherford fell to the ground, and Brown was continuing his murderous attack when another warder rushed to the rescue and knocked the hammer out of Brown’s hand and secured him. Drs. Philson and Sell were called and found Rutherford had sustained a bad wound over the left eye, but is not expected to prove dangerous. Brown is believed to be insane. He has been three years in prison, and is reported to have developed several delusions. The doctors have since the assault examined Brown, but are not satisfied that he is insane. Brown is a powerfully built negro, and the hammer is 141 b weight. July 20. The negro convict Brown, who attempted to murder the warder Rutherford, has been committed to Avondale Asylum as a lunatic.
