Miss Finck is on her way to the colony by the Toagariro, due here this week. She will be given away by Sir M. O'Borke, and Mr Loughrer, tho member for Linwood, will act as best man. ! The Premier and all the members uf the Ministry will, I understand, be present at the wedding, whioh takes place at St. Andrews. - Wellington correspondent of Press. Accidents.—On Friday evening, shortly before 4 o'clock, a six year old son of Mr G. Oullimoi-e, of Wai-iti jear Tiruaru, fell into a dam near his parents' house and was drowned. He was ijuite dead when found —about an hour aftsr he had been soen playing about the house.—On Saturday morning a man named McGregor, formerly a laborer on the railway, was crossing the line ntar Bruce's Mill, to the south of Timaru, when he was struck by tho train just arriving from Wainjate. Fortunately the engine knocked him clear of the line, but he was rather badly hurt about the hip and neck. He was taken to the hospitiil and is doing well. The engine driver saw the man, sounded the whistle and put ou the bruke, but all his effoits were not sufficient to save him.

The Synod, which has the boner of nomination, will not meet till June 21st. Bishop Kennion's refusal must have been in reply to a private communication.

A Successful Baker. Count Zang, who died recently at Vienna, leaving a fortune of £1,600,000, commßnced life as n baker. Ho went to Paris in 1842, and kept for many years the first sliop at which Vienna bread whs m*de and sold. This establishment still exists io Rue Tlicheliou, and has always been known as the Maisoh Zang. SoHodV Buildings.— The Minister of Education, roporting on the cost of sohool buildings, says that siace the passing of the jfiduoation Act. the Government has provided £OO,OOO mere than was necessary to erect buildings of a lasting and durable character, and sufficient in number and capacity to nocommodato the largest attendinoe of children yet recorded. The case of Auckland is mentioned as an instance of the wasteful way of erecting so many small schools, to say nothing of the waste of teaching power, which, by reason of so many small schools, must be involved. He recommends the adoption of a model design for school- buildings by the central department in Wellington, and thinks £20,000 to £30,000 a yaar should be sufficient. to meet all ordinary builiing requirements. The Salvation Army, Temuiu.— On Saturday last Colonel Taylor, accompanied by his wife, arrived from Christchurch by the express train, and in the afternoon two lasses named Lieutenant Noble and Cadet Wood arrived from Waimate, and all joined io the services on Saturday evening ard Sunday, when there were l»rge attendances. On Monday evening a tea w*s held in the barracks, to which about 200 sat down. Captains Williams (of Timiru) and Harvey (of Ashbnrton) were also in attendance. The catering was done in Mr Bari'u usually oxcelleDt s'ylo, and all appeared to b« thoroughly satisfied. After a march through the streets the usual tvoniog service w«e hold, the barracks bong crowded. A SENSATION. A sensational incident occurred at Glenrowan reoently. A man got into a train without purchasing a ticket, and when the porter ask fid him to shew - hi* paoj he drew a. revolver from his pocket and prooented it at the head of the terrified official. He did not fire, though he had the oppO'tbnity, but refused stubbornly to lave the oarriag*. At the same time he ordered the porter to make himself scarce. Th» man needed no second reminder to do this. The train went on to Wangaratta, wbert the police were acquainted with what had occurred. But it was a ticklish thing to arrest the man, who might have shot the first person he saw. At length, however, the railway guard got the carriage in which he was shunted. The train went on, and by a dexterous manoeuvre the police closed the carriage and scoured the man inside without any injury. He wjs ! then lodged in the Wangaratta look-up. i Pbinok William.—Prince William, eldest son of the present Emperor of Germany, has a crippled arm. The fingers are more knobs. In the Hussar uniform there is a pocket, and he wears it because the three fingers, of his helpless member can be hung in the pockdt. Otherwise it bangs awkwardly and helplessly in its sleeve. His horses are especially trained, and before the Prince mounts are ridden three-quarters of an hour to wear them down. He can just manage to hold the reins. The fork with which he eats is of silver, and not conspicuously different from others, but fixed to the under tine there is a small sharp blade. What the Prinoe cannot out with the one hand and with this blade he does not undertake to eat. The right hand and arm are large, and of extraordinary dexterity, but the little finger is deformed by i growth, which the Prince only imperfoctly conceals by wearing rings up to near the third phulinge. DisfleaSEd VuLAaEKS.— According' to Truth there was a small riot at Bolton recently because a marriige which had been anticipated with much interest did not come off. The bridegroom, a wellknown tradesman, who is ah ardent advocate of temperance principles, went to the bride's house before proceeding to the church, and placing a pledge card before her, insisted on her at once signing it. She refused, whereupon he announced that there should be no wedding. The clergyman and a number of friends were waiting at the church, but the parties did not appear, and when the cause transpired a number of women assembled outside the bridegroom's housi and pelted hisn with rotten eggs and other pleasant musilas, and so much resentment was manifested that he has found it expedient to leave home for a lime. Fora» Paralysed.- -A limaru lettercarrier named John Miller, who had the postal delivory for the aouth end of the town, not appearing at the postoffice at the usual hour yesterday morning, a messenger was despatched to his house. Miller lived alone io a cottage in North Street, and on the messenger knocking at the door he got. no response. th» police were at once informed of this, and Mounted Constable Bradshaw proceeded to the hons« and forced an entrance. He found Miller in bed, suffering from paralysis, and the constable had the sufferer removed to the hospital at o&ce. Miller is well known in the district, haw ing been a letter-carrier in Timaru for many years. He had been ailing a little lately, and was being attended by Dr Hogg, but up to Saturday night he was ab'e to perform his duties.—limaru Mail.
