Sir George Grey has purchased lot 8, part of the Hurstmere estate »t Lake Takapuna, and intends to erect a house there at once. The lot contains about 5 acres, and has now upoa it some native bush. Sir George Grey will occupy a situation hardly to be surpassed anywhere. At a meeting of tbe Wellington Chamber of Commerce the following resolutions were adopted That with a view to a more speedy settlement of the North Island it is desirable that Ml native lands --subject to the reservation hereafter referred to—-should be made available for occupation. To accomplish this it is recommended ; That the Government proceed to complete the survey of native lands with all possible despatch. That the cost of survey fie charged on tfia lands surveyed. That on the completion of the survey the land be put into the Native Lands Court, the titles investigated. the ownership defined, and certificates ot tit'e issued under the Land Transfer Act, subject to payment of (be cost of survey ; that all such lands should then be subject to rates and taxes ; that sufficient lands be reserved to provide sustenance and occupation for the natives, including any lands at present iu bso or cultivation by them. Sir James Hector, Executive Oomr missioner for New Zealand, will leave by the Waka'tipu on Wednesday to superintend in person the arrangement of the Now Zealand court at the Melbourne Exhibition, By the Ifth March (he latest date £tt whiah applications could be received, the demand for space amounted to no loss than 25,787 feet, while the total space occupied by exhibits finally sent will probably exceed 28,000 feet. The value of the New Zealand exhibits is estimated at £20,000. There will be a very fine display by some of the Government departments, notably the Public Works, which will send numerous samples of timber, minerals, models, drawings, etc,, but there is an absence of exhibits of candles, soap and leather, from the beat of New Zealand manufacturers. It is certain however, that a magnificent display will bo made of New Zealand products and manufactures gecerally.
