The Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board have received a letter from G. W. Barley alleging scandalous ill-treat-ment of Mrs Sharpe, a woman who died at the refuge last week, and who was the wife of Mr A. Sharpe, artist and architect, formerly of this city. It is stated that a short time before her death Mrs Sharpe complained that delicacies sent her by her friends seldom reached her; that she had been thrown and pulled about; that she had been forced, though suffering from bronchitis, to sleep on the floor with wet clothes, and that she had been threatened with removal to the lunatic asylum if she made any complaint. The board have referred the letter to Dr Lindsay, house surgeon at the hospital and refuge. At a meeting of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle it was resolved to petition Parliament to auppress totalisators and sweepstakes on racecourses. On Monday morning John McKay, master tailor, was found in a room at the British Hotel, Lyttelton, with a box of “ rough on rats” by his side. The cause of the suicide is not known.
At the inquest at Christchurch en Monday on the body of Edward James Guerin Price, inspector of sheep, who shot himself in Hagley Park, a letter from deceased, addressed to MrE. Foster, district inspector, was read, stating that he was tired of his life, and had been treated badly by Government. His salary had been recently reduced from £230 to £l5O per annum. He was a single man of sober habits. A verdict was returned of suicide while temporarily insane.
At half-pusfc one on Sunday morning at Hokitika, Hansen’s Post Office Hotel, Evans’ Red Lion Hot«l, a large two storey building used as a hardware shop, Malfroy and Craig's timber yard and a portion of a shop, with all outbuildings were destroyed by tire. Mrs Brown, daughter of Hansen, of the Post Office Hotel, jumped from an upstairs window with an infant in her arms, and sprained one of her ankles and broke the small bones. The loss is estimated at from £SOOO to £6OOO and the insurances amount to £IBSO.
A telegram from O'sborne says the well of the Minerva Petroleum Company has reached the third oil sand, with strong indication of oil on the tools. Mr Fleming, director of the South Pacific Cowpany, is here, and a teat will be made on Thursday of the yielding capacity of the well from which the overflow occurred in December.
