PLEASANT VALLEY SCHOOL.

• Last Tuesday was a day looked forward to by the juvenile portion of the inhabitants of Pleasant _ Valley with a considerable amount of interest, being the occasion of the annual school treat. For weeks before any one passing the playground during the hours of recess might have seen the male portion of the scholars community assiduously practising for the different events that were likely to come off at the treat, and which were most of them carried out on Tuesday. Quaid 2. 1 The above events were very well contested- The wrestling and jumping were eagerly watched by numbers of the parents and friends. _ Some of the young competitors evinced considerable merit in their mode of contesting the events. Some of the young pedestrians showed no little merit too in their performances in this line of athletics, their style and pace contrasting very favorably with that of older and more practised walkers. One young gentleman had provided himself with a pair of shoes, but the rest walked mostly;on their barb feet. The girls’ walking match had to be gone over three times to decide second place. The pleasure of the day was considerably marred, however, by several hail storms, accompanied by thunder and lightning. This drove the children and spectators into the shelter of the schoolroom, and the time was agreeably spent in listening to several songs rendered by the youngsters, under the conduotorship of the teachers. Mr Riordan, of Geraldine, catered for the wants of the inner man in his accustomed satisfactory manner. The Chairman, Mr Brophy, made himself übiquitous as director of the sports, while Messrs Bennett and Trumper did everything in their power by getting the room ready and attending to the outside of the tea department.
