Thu Wesleyan Conference to-day decided that the time had cot yet arrived for the union of all Methodist bodies.

Arrived—Pukaki, from Lyttelton
The Postal Conference has been concluded. The general feeling of members is stated to be adverse to the construction of the Pacific cable, principally on account of the long term for which the subsidy is required. The proposal to allow persons writing to other colonies to send the postal stump of the colony from which they write for a reply was negatived on the ground that such a practice ’would be open to abuse. All the decisions arrived at by the Conference not requiring legis'ation will come into force immediately.

The cricket match between Victoria and New South Wales is now proceeding. When time was called for the day, New South Wales had totted up 507 for the loss of only seven wickets. John Stapleton, a minor and a now arrival in the colony, was found dead yesterday on the road near Hill Grove mine, about 213 miles north of Sydney. When picked up it was seen that his throat was cut, and he had also received several scalp wounds, in fact the base of his scull was fractured. His watch, winch be was known to have worn when last seen, is missing, and it is supposed that Stapleton was murdered. There is great distress among the unemployed, and to-day one of their number committed suicide, owing to bis being unable to obtain work. At the races to-day there was a large attendance. The Anniversary Handicap resulted as follows : Cardigan. 8s 1 ; Centaur, 7st 21b, 2 ; Acme, Bst 121 b, 3. Seven horses started, "’ime—2rain 25secs. The Centennial Stakes was won by Paladin.

A Kanaka, who attempted to murder the mau oi a sealing vessel on Thursday Island, was shot dead. Rutter, Mayor of Rockhampton, has been sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude on the first charge of false pretences. It is said that mining speculations were the cause of his fail.

The cricket match, Vernon’s team versus Tasmania, was drawn owing to the rain. The former scored 399. The local men lost two wickets for 136.
