John Sh'eehy was committed for trial at Auckland on Friday on a charge of indecently assaulting a child three years of age.

Cameron, proprietor of the Mabel mine, at Tin Creek, Te Aroha, has entered into nnaugements with the Bank of New Zealand to forward for him to Germany fifteen tons of selected ore from that mine for treatment at Frieburg. It is reported that two prospectors, Baker and Birch, have discovered a reef at Mata Creek, a few miles north of Grahamstown, Thames, and have obtained 15ozs of loose gold, A lively meeting of members of the re* ceutiy disbanded Ponsnnby Corps, Auckland, was held on Friday night. The business was to consider in what manner (he funds of (he late corps should bo disbursed, but rather sultry scenes occurred, and at one stage the police were caked in to keep order. It waa resolved that a ten and coffee service be presented to -Captain McDonald, and it was further decided that the sum of one half penny and a leather medal be awarded to Private Siarrel, who did not seem to be on good terms with others of the company. The Wellington City Council find that their expenditure for the half year is £3OOO more than their income. Contracting is to take the place of day labor, Mr Mackay, of the Geological Survey Department, hw visited the recently discovered gar spring on Mr Crawford’s property, Wellington. Gas continues to pour forth with great force, and in the first attempt to plug up the pipe, the ping was driven forty feet into the air. On a second attempt the pipe waa burst. Gus now continues alight. The gas is said to be a pure illuminating one, free from sulphur, and it is probable that it can bo used for illnminating purposes without refilling. Campaigners in the Maori wars who are now resident in Wellington, being dissatisfied with the report of the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into their claims for land grants, are taking steps to have a Bill introduced in Parliament, and are urging further agitation of their rights. From a private loiter received at Hokitika by the last San Francisco mail it is elicited that the concession now asked by the Midland Railway Company from the Government is an understanding that if tire land grants of the company do not average ten shillings per acre an additional grant will bo made sufficient to raise the receipts to the requisite sum. Oa Tuesday afternoon, about 4 o’clock, a two-year-old child, (laughter of Mr Frederick Siuer, of Waimate Bush, was drowned in a swamp hole about three fie* deep, in front of the house. The child was seen by its mother a few minutes before. Search was made and it was found. Every effort to restore animation was unsuccessful,

Sir Tillius Vogel was reported to have loft "Wellington suddenly fur Auckland by the Te Anau on Friday night having engaged his passage at the Dunedin office. He is, however, still in Wellington. The north-west gale of Friday and Saturday at Wellington was one of the most violent that has taken place for many years, both in the harbor and on the other side of the ranges in the Wairarapa district. Scarcely any damage is reported in town, but the train was stuck up on approaching the incline by the fuiy of the wind, and had to bo divided and taken on in sections.

Dr Hector reports on the gas discovered on Mr Crawford’s property, that it probably hss its origin in deeply buried swamp matter. It is a very feeble illtiminant, but is suitable for heating or for driving gus engines.

On Saturday night n six-roomed lions" at Richmond, near Christchurch, was bu-ned down, and two cottages were aerioiHy damaged. They belonged to Mr Richard John Sunderland, a bker, who is insured in the New Zealand Officfor £450 on the whole, 110 occupied the house destroyed. Very lit’le of his furniture was saved. The cottages were occupied by Mr John Lloyd and Mr William Trenbath, whoso furniture was saved. The fire is supposed to have been c-used by a candle, left on a table by a window, setting fire to the curtains. It is stated on very good authority that several of the mo-t prominent chiefs in the Gisborne district are getting up a gie it feast to welcome Te Kooti on his visit to Poverty Bay, the locafi'y of the meeting being Waituho, close to Chambers’ homestead, ten miles from Gisborne. There is intense indignation, especially amongst those whose relatives were massacred by Te Kooti. Several have vehemently declared that they will shoot him like a dog. Great fears are entertained that the threat will be carried into effmt. The setters are anxious lint the Government sloauld use its influence to prevent the meeting.
