A STEAMER IN TROUBLE.
Auckland, August 15. The Northern Steamship Company’s s.s, Macgregor, which broke down off Waitara on Friday, losing hor rudder, sternpost, and propeller, was sighted by the Gairloch, and the latter in response to signals of distress bore down and took the disabled steamer in tow. About 40 miles from Manukau she was forced to leave off towing, the hawsers having been carried away and feuled the Gairloch’s Ipropallor. The Gairloch stood by the Macgregor till Satarday afternoon and then left for Onebunga to get more coal and fresh hawsers leaving the Macgregor apparently eafe under canvas. On Sunday morning the two steamers Gairloch and Staff'd left to search for the Macgregor, but returned this morning without finding any trace of bsr. It is believed that the Macgregor would drift towards Kaipara, but the Gairloch went as far as Kaipara Hoads without sighting her, while the Staffs went thirty miles out to sea. Great anxiety is felt. On account of the high wind and sea the Gairloch was trouble to take the pjfibengers from the Macgregor. As the W>od is from the land, there is no danger of the steamer going ashore. The Stuffa again started this nursing to search for the missing ste-oner.
