THE WRECK OF THE NORTHUMBERLAND.
It has been decided by the Jubilee Celebration Committee at Napier to recommend that the jubilee memorial shall take the form of a Mariner’* Belief Fund, primarily for the support of the families of the men who lost their lives at the wreck of the Northumberland, but also for the subsequent relief of distressed mariners or their families. To enable this to be done several thousands of pounds will be required. The offertories at St. John’s and St. Andrew’s churches on Sunday have been given to the fund. In nearly all the churches reference was made to the Northumberland disaster. In the}Besident|Magistrates Court, Nupier, on Monday, two men were fined £lO and £ls, respectively, on a charge of wrecking at the Northumberland. The Magistrate held that the minor charge only of being in unlawful possession of goods, was proved. One was sentenced 1 1 21 days’ imprisonment, and four were committed for trial on a similar charge. One of the men fined was a Chinaman. He brought an interpreter. In the course of the bearing it transpired that the interpreter was wearing a pair of trousers from the wreck. He was promtly arrested, but after.hearinghis explanation, he'was discharged.
