The cortege was over a quarter of a mile long, as many more people being collected at the cemetery. The funeral services J»ere conducted by by Bishop of Waipu, and the Revs. Messrs Walsh and Patterson. The service WBB read during a tremendous downpour of rain. The enquiry into the loss of the Northumberlund began on Friday. In his evidence Captain Todd said he valued the ship at £20,000. She was partly hi. sured. The cargo was. worth £50,000.. He did pot think that if the Bteamers had been out earlyljon the morning of the 11th they could have towed the Northumberland out owing to the heavy swell. He had visited the port'of Napier with the Northumberland four times. He had never experienced so heavy a gnle or one of such duration at JSTapior as the one of the 9th, 10th and 11th. This voyage the vessel was a little closer in shore than in the other trips;- The cause of the vessol being wrecked was the force of the gale and the heavy eea, and the open road ivay. The cables and chains had beeD surveyed twice during the last three and a half years by the Board of Trade surveyors. At the Police Court on Friday, five men, charged with wrecking and stealing were brought up. and remanded. Other aireste are likely to be made. The ugeats of the ship have Hent £2l to the crews of each steamer. Probably all will be given'tothe fundi being raised for the families'of''the drbwaed men.
