THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE.
London, April 22. At the conference Mr Edward Stanhope said the Government were not prepared to place a sum on the Estimates for the defence of Mbsny and Thursday Island, and the Government would only give obsolete cannon to the value, including a submarine mine, of £12,000. I‘he colonies would have to construct batteries costing £27,000, and maintain a force of 85 men during peace and 350 during war. The delegates expressed amazement at the announcement that the Government were not prepared to contribute to the cost of constructing the forts, and it is likely that the opposition expressed will lead to Mr Stanhope making fresh proposals, The Victorian, South Australian, and Queensland Governments have agreed to the proposals of the Admiralty regarding the naval defence of the colonies, April 23. . At to-day’s sitting of the Imperial Conference, the Secretary for War submitted in detail the proposals by the Imperial Government for the defence of coaling stations throughout the Empire. The estimated expense of such defence was a million and a-half, exclusive of the cost of Australasian defence. Sir 8. Griffiths and Sir Francis Dillon Bell dwelt upon the largo payments of Australasia on account of defence, and the small share of England towards the same.
