BACHELORS TEA MEETING AT TEMUKA.
. A novelty in the way of a tea meeting was held last evening in the Wesleyan Church, the usual order of things being reversed, inasmuch as the bachelors belonging to the congregation provided the feast and waited a f the tables. There was a larre attendance, and the tea. was excollc; cin every respect. The tables were piesided, over by. Messrs Harrison, Holwell, Barrett, and Miles, and the way they performed their duties gavs entire satisfaction. ■ A feature of the meeting was the way in which the tables were la»d, sod decorated, with flowers. Over the pulpit was a tablet bearing the words “The bachelor* bid you welcome.” After the good things were disposed of a : public meeting was held, the chair being occupied by Mr J. W, Miles, who said that the meeting was not altogether fori he purpose of raiding money, but certainly it; was necee y to provide the means of carrying on Church work. It would be desirable, too, if it cocld be relieved of debt. There was much causa for gratitude for the success they had achieved. The good seed sown had sunk deep into their hearts, and they were a united church, which moy be regarded as the first degree of success, i Mr J. Brown next addressed the meeting, and referred to the tablet over the pulpit in which the bachelors bade them welcome. He urged upon them all to pull together, and illustrated this by an amusing anecdote. It was necessary that all should attend church regularly, and he earnestly appealed to them all to give themselves up to God. The Rev.’ Mr Thomas said the two previous speeches, were the best be had beard for a long time; Mr Miles delivered the best speech be had ever made, and Mr Brown altogether eclipsed Mmaelf. He spoke at some length on the bachelors, and threw , out hints that they should caste to remain in their present state. He urged them Ml to practice gentleness, kjndness, and Christian tact, till those who criticised them would say, “ How thesti Christians love each olher.” ’ The Chairman then called upon some of the young ladiea present , to. move a vote of thanks to .the bachelors for the excellent way ib which they had entertained them.
Mips Florence Brown moved a hearty vote' of thanks to the bachelors for the excellent tea they, had provided., . The motion was seconded by Miss Buxton, and. amidst great ap» plauee.■ . Messrs H. M. Mites, Barrett, Holwell, and Harrison, made humorous speeches in response, and votes of thanks was also carried to every one who had assisted. During the evening the choir, with Mias Brown presiding at the harmonium, rendered some hymns m an excellent manner. The meeting terminated by the Doxology being sung, and it must be classed as one of the most enjoyable held in the church for a long time.
