The Hoo. Mr Ballanoe arrived at Auckland on Sunday; receiving deputations yesterday. He will leave for Rotrua today on railway land and native business. He will then visii the Waikato native chiefs, returning in ten days, after which he will visit Hokianga. lie has been asked to give an address at Auckland on (he village settlement scheme, but he does not intend to dp so. At Paeroa races (Auckland) on Saturday, a boy rode across the course. Two competitors in a pony race collided with him. One pony was hilled on the spot, and the two jockeys, Moors and Cook, were badly hurt. Moore was unconscious till Sunday. • Richard R, Bewe, aged 20, was accidentally drowned while bathing on Sunday afternoon in the Manukau at Lfangare (Auckland). He got out of his depth, sank before his two companions reached him. At Gisborne a man named John Harris got his arm drawn : into a grass-seed threshing machine and fearfully mangled. The arm was amputated close to the shoulder, but Harris died from the shock a few hours afterwards. The ship Jessie Headman, Captain Gibson, 107 days from Liverpool, arrived at Wellington on Monday,
