CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE
The Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Thursday evening, the 23rd inst; :
The crops are looking more favorable than they promised to do t>t the ecfmmencement of the present month, thanks to the favorable weal her of the past fortnight. Hay harvest is pretty welt complete, but crops are light as also in the ryegrass seed in many: instances the latter is being stripped. The late frost cut some of the potatoes rather severely but tbe damage has not been general. Wheat again finds holders firm, and buyers are only replenishing when absolutely necessary. Pearl is still best in demand at ’4b fid for prime parcels in moderate quantities. Tuscan and Hunters vary from-4s 5d- to 4a fid; second quality has been fairly*well cleared at 4s 2d to 4s 3d and chicken -wheat is out of stock beyond a few small lots at 3s lOd to 4s. , ; ; -
Oats have been sold very low, which has attracted buyers from the Australian Colonies, but ..as yet but few transactions. , have eventuated. Sales are generally favorable to buyers; milling are scarce and nominally 2s to 2s Id ; short feed have buyers at Is 9d, but holders are asking more money ; Tartars and Danish are neglected at Is 7s to Is Bd. Barley—Malting nearly all quitted and feed lines—if bold—have a good ehquiry at 2s 3d rn 2i 4d.
Beans and peas have but little business to note note. Lyegrass has no business in old seeds, but enquiries arebeing made as to the values of new crops, but as yet nothing definite has been'settled. * *
Potatoes have no buyers, and holders have given up the order of trying to sell. Dairy Produce —Butter is very low. Buyers cannot exceed 5d for their present orders, and cheese is not in strong demand at 4i to sd, according to size and quality. The above prices are those paid to farmers and delivered f.o.b. Lyttelton, sacks extra.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Melbourne, Dec. 24. The New Zealand Loan and Mercsntile Company'* usual weekly sale took place yesterday. T,;ere were 3384 bale* offered, and 2684 were told, making a total of 2906 bale* di*pb»ed of during the i: week.The bidding was spirited: throughout, gieaiy being decidedly firmer than lait week, booured was somewhat ea*ier. Greasy realised to ilii, loomed 16d, woahed fleece to 14fd. Sydney, Dec. 24. New Zealrnd wheat b*i declined to 3i 9J, and oats to. 2s.
