GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held on last Wednesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), R. Mackay, R. H. Posflethwaito, R. A. Barker and W. Moody. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Tuj Chairman said in accordance with instructions given at list meeting a tendei for the Opihi Bridge had been accepted, the lender sig'ud, and the contractors had now got the timber on the ground and wure ready to make a start with the work. The late floods had injured the Pareora and Opihi bridges, washing nwny some of tho approaches, Matters in reference to the irrigation proposals would come before them. IRRIGATION. Mr F. G. Raymond was present to watch tire interests of the Council. Mr A. Peiry, bolicitor for the Australian and New Zealand Mortgage and Investment Association, attended to object to the Council taking a portion of the Association's property for irrigation works. Mr N. T. Faulkner, civil engineer and surveyor, attended with Mr Perry, and was examined at some length, stating the objections the Association had to the Council taking its land for the construction of a water-race. After some discussion, the deputation having left, Mr Moody moved, Mr Barker seconded- aud it was carried unanimously—" That in the opinion of the Council it is expedient that the proposed irrigation works through the land of the New Zealand Mortgage and Investment Association (Limited), should be executed, and that no private injury will be dona thereby, for which due compensation is not provided by the Public Works Act, 1882, and that the laud of the Association proposed to be taken be taken in the manner provided by the Public Works Act, 1882." Mr Butler also interviewed the Council in reference to the valuation of his land proposed to be taken for water-race purposes, and, after a discussion, agreed to accept the valuation made by Mr E. Ford on behalf of the Council with £lO added. At the suggestion of the Chuirmau, Mr Moody mo\ed, Mr Barker seconded, and it was carried—" That a Cotn"mittee consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Moody and Postlethwaite be appointed to attend to all the preliminary steps in regard to obtiiuing funds from the Government for the purpose of carrying out the Seadown aud Raogitata inigation schemes with as little delay as possible." OPIHI AND PAREORA BRIDGES. The Engineers reported that tho recent heavy floods in the Opihi and Pareora rivers had breached the south approaches to the bridges over them, and recommended immediate repiirs by making good the embankments behind the sheet-piling, and protecting the approaches by heavy blocks of rubble stone. Tbey also recommended that the dood debris should be moved from the piles of the Opihi bridge ; and that the accumulation of diit and vegetable growth between the plaufcs of the Pareora bridge should be cleaned out. It was decided—" That in the case of the Opihi bridge the Engineers carry out the work as suggested, and in the case of the Pareora bridge they proceed with th 9 repairs en receiving the consent of the "Waimate Council to bear half the cost." SLAUGHTERHOUSE LICENSE. Messrs Bolton and Co. were granted a transfer of their slaughterhouse license to nsother section. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Mount Peel Road Board agreeing, to the Council's terms in reference to the Opihi bridge. From the Public Works Department, stating it could not give the Council control of the si'e of the proposed south Opuha bridge.—Legal opinion to be got on the question. From the Ashburton County Council, asking this Council to remit cheque for £75, half-cost of certain repairs to the Rangitata traffic bridge. From the Colonial Secrefcnry's office, in reference to anieudmeats to the Counties Act. FINANCIAL. Tho Chairman said so far as ho could Bee, the Council, after completing all works in hf»r>;l, would be landed about £I4OO or £ISOO on thy wrong side of tho V Accounts to the amount of £llO 4s 7d were passed for piyme it, aud the Couucil adjourned.
