August 26. A company has been privately floated to work the Day Dawn gold mine at Charters Towers in Queensland. The application for shares represented £50,000 in excess of the capital required. Aug. 27. Prince Bismarck and M. Da Giers, Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs, are hold a conference at Frazenbad. The Bulgarian crisis is the principal subject under ‘iiscussion. Mr J, Norton was present at yesterday’s g'tting of the Paris Trades Union Congress. Mr Norton, who was received with considerable warmth, made a speech, io the course of which he denounced the policy of freetrade and assisted immigration, uni declared that the popular feeling in Australia was strongly opposed to the influx of (he Chinese. He also spoke of the tyranny of capital in Australia. Referring to the .question of the Pacific Islands, he seated that the working classes in Australia were strongly opposed to sending recidivistes to any of those islands, but they were, he said, willing that France should annex the New Hebrides. The serious differences which have existed for some time between Sir John Pope Hennessy, Governor of Mauritius, and Mr Clifford Lloyd, have engaged the attention of the Right Hon. Edward Stanhope. The matter will receive further consideration at hia hands, but in the meantime and pending his final decision he has censured Sir Pope Hennessy, and removed Mr Lloyd to the Seychelles Islands Dependencies in Mauritius. Aug. 29. ‘ Mr Gladstone has issued a pampjilet on Ihe Home Rule Question, iu which he justifies his action in having concealed his views from his colleagues in the Cabinet until the matter was rips for public consideration. He admits, however, that it ia necessary the Land Purchase and Home Rule Questions should be dealt with separately. Aug. 30. A rumor Is in circulation, the authority of which, however, is seriously doubted, to the effect that Lord Randolph Cliurchill Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, intends to submit a proposal for the imposition of a duty on foreign hops, colonial articles to be still admitted free.
