FOOTBALL.
s : F. NEW SOUTH WALES The intercolonial football match, Auckland v. New South Wales, took place on Saturday afternoon at Newmarket. 6000 people were present; the weather was showry, and the ground sloppy. Shaw captained the Sydney team, and J. A. Warbrick the A uckland team. Lecky was unable to play owing to the death of bis father, and A. Stewart, of the Grafton Club, replaced him. Auckland won the toss, and having the wind in their favor, had (he best of the play in tjhe first spell,; bat it was confioed to work among the forwards, the b*c|{B being not. able to run. The Sydney rneid parsed splendidly. A few minutes after starting, Whiteside got in from a short run, but Warbrick missed the goal. Towards the end of the first term, Lindsay got a try, the ball being passed out from the scrimmage. Ryan took the kick, but missed the goal. The Sydney men were forced down four “tinjef in |s lh<fs first spell. In the second, .€» spilt Sydney iimproved, but was not equal to the local team. Shaw, captain of the Sydney team, retired ic the middle of the term, his shoulder being injured. Shortly afterwards J. a. Warbrick got a try, the ball being pissed out of the scrimmages, but be again missed the goal. The Sydney men rallied to wards the end of the match, which'lregulted in a win for Auckland by six points to nil. The greatest good feeling was shown on both sides and by the Beth teams met in the evening at the Imperial Hotel, where a smoke concert was held. A private assembly dance was given in honor of the Sydney men on Monday. ' WELLINGTON F. NELSON. About 1000 were present at the match Wellington y.. Nelson, which resulted in a win for-WeUington by lO.points to nil. Nelson was outmatched all through. * _ CANTERBURY F. OTAGO. It was decided to play the Canterbury t;>Otago interprov.incial match at Dunedin on i Saturday, notwithstanding that the ground was anything bat satisfactory. Ths match proved an enjoyable one, *nd resuited in a draw, neither side scoring. On the whole, Canterbury had the best of the game, their style of play proving more suitable ,to Re state of the ground. Time after time the Otago backs lost ground s by t Attempting to pick up the ball, while the 5 Canterbury backs always kicked. Frassr’si; kicking aadgeneral smartness saved, ;j)ie f side qyer and over again. Helmore, .Horner, and Allardyce played well for,. Canterbury.,; There was a largo attendance, notwithstanding the cold and sloppy condition of tbe ground.
