S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual monthly meeting 0 f the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday in the Education Office, Government building*. Present—Mr S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), the Rev*. G. Barclay and J. Smythe, Dr Foater, and Messrs J. Talbot, J. Jackson, B. A. Barker, W. B. Howell, and M. Gray. The Chairman stated that since last meeting appointments had been made as followsMr D. Brown to Rangitata South ;.Mm Roberts to Waihao.; Mr A. Mahan to the new; school at. Rangitata •Station ; Mr i. Erakioe aa assistant at the Geraldine School; Mre. !iVhiitoa as Sewing Mistress at Scotsburn, and Mis* Annie Mcllroy and Master H..-Q. Wake as first year pupil teachers at the Timaru Schools. A circular was received. .from the Education DepartmeJt with reference to the insurance on .School buildings and Board’s contribution in respect of the same. Mr D. West reported that the Master* residences at Belfield and Silverstream h'd been completed ; also the repairs to the Pleasant Point School. Work at Upper Waitohi was being pushed on, and the painting contracts were ‘ proceeding satisfactorily. The Architect in conolnaioo asked that a sum of £2 be granted to make a drain from the Master’s residence at Winchester* l ' -I* The result of theannual examination of pupil teachers was handedin, the following being of interest to this district;—Fourth year pupil teacher, Miss Isabella Morton, Temuka, 513 marks, second on list. Third year; Master Murdoch McLeod, Temuka, 627 marks,' first on list; Master John McLeod, Orari, 538 marks, second ; Mister J. P. Kxlaugher, Geraldine, 534 murks, third ; Master Harry Smith, Geraldine, 512 marks, fourth ; Master W. J. Lewis, Geraldine, 488 marks, fifth ; Master G. Anderson; Waitohi eighth ; Mies Eva ■ Meredith, Kakabn Bush, 434 marks, ninth. Second year, Misj Marguet Russell, ‘ Temuka, 431 marks, sixth. Among those .who failed were W. J. Glanville; Woodbury (third year); Margaret McLeod, Pleasant Point and Francos : Hawke, Geraldine (second year) ; Alex. McLean, Orari Bridge, (firet year). The Inspector’s general report on the Orari Bridge School was then read, and as it contained matter, of serious moment was ordered to be forwarded to the Committee for their consideration. Parts of the Winchester repbrt were then T read, bnt as nothing appeared to be f very wrong the Committee!* attention was only called to them. i Proposed by Mr Gray* seconded by Mr Barker;—“That a copy of the Inspector’s report on the inaccuracies in the register of the .Orari Bridge School be forwarded to the Master, and he be requested to forward any exp'anatioa he may think fit before the next meeting of the Board, or that he may then appear before the Board.”—Curried., On the motion of the Rev. Geo. Barclay theSecretnry wna instructed to writetothe Master of the Winchester ■school directing him to be mors careful 'in following the instructions of tbe : Inspector in making up the school register. A request from the Timaru School Committee that the services of two fourth year pupil teachers might be retained until after the annual examination was refused. ■ The Rev, Geo. Barclay, on behalf of the Commit ee, handedin the draft report on secondary education and the pupil teaching staff, but as the Committee desired to amplify it, and give members generally an opportunity of fully considering it, the discussion- was adjourned \ till next meeting. Miss Mary Feodall was appointed an assistant teacher at the Pleasant Point school, Mr Dawson temporary master of the Opihi school, and Mr Wooistein headmaster of the Wai-iti school. I Letters were read— ■L. From the Pleasant Valley Committee, asking that a small shed be erected, twothirds of the cost of which- they asked the Board to bear.—Granted. From Mr James Austin, asking that his daughter, Miss Margaret Austin, a scholarship holder, should be allowed to attend the Timaru High School.—Granted, From the Rangitata (new) School Com- . mittee, asking for a grant for shed ; that the grate and chimney be slightly altered, and subm.t:i> g a proposal from a householder for fencing. —Th# proposal for fencing was adopted, the Board to pay half coat, and £3 5s wna granted towards the cost of a shed. From Mr C. B. Shaw, on behalf of the proposed Totara Valley School Committee, informing the Board what steps bud been taken towards building a school, and requesting the Board to 'instruct their architect to prepare plans and specifications for the building at once.—-The Board decided to accede to the request, i-ccepting Mr Howell's enggeetioh that the householders of Totara Valley shonld bo p' allowed to erect the 'school buildings'•TjjU themselves, subject to the Board’s Architect’s approval, From Mr Thos. Hughes, late Master of* the Geraldine School/ requesting the Board to. present him with a testimonial. —Dr Foster, Mr Talbot,,and the Rev. G. Barclay spoke very highly of Mr Hughes’ copabilities as a teacher, and on the . motion of .the Rev. Q. Barclay, seconded ■/* by Mr Howell, it was unanimously re-. ' solved—“ That the Chairman snd Inspect tor be authorised to give Mr H«gh<» a testimonial stating the period which he had been in the Board's enSploymer t, and <-* the fidelity with which he is deemed to ? have discharged his duly.” From the Temuka Committee, asking that the sum of 17a 6d, spent in re*

pairs to the School, be refunded.—Refused, as the expenditure not authorised by the Board. From the Orari South Committee, asking for a grant of £5 for repairs.— £2 10s, half cost,. was granted by the Board. , From Mr Thos. Hughes, of Garaidioe, asking the Board to t»»ke over a copper btfiler just erected by him at the Maater’a bouse, Geraldine.—Agreed to, transaction to be carried out through Chairman of Committee.

From the Kakahu Committee, asking for * grant for a porch, and that a Mmtress’residence be erected,—Mr Barclay > moved—‘fjTbai a further grunt in Ties of enlarging the porch, erecting fences, and changes in closets, be, made to the Committee, the amounts being conditional on what the Committee may be to do in carrying out the works."
