SPIRITUALISM.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of 29th inst. the Rev. Mr Hamilton finds fault with my criticism of his sermon as reported in your paper, lu refering to your report, he says, “The report reads further on, evil spirits are among created beings,” But if the Rev. Mr Hamilton will read the report over again he will not find one word about the Invisible world which he mentions in the next sixteen lines of his letter, therefore my question was quite natural under the circumstances. In reference to what I said about Christ, 1 am sorry that I was not a little more explicit, as I can assure Mr Hamilton that T have no wish to misrepresent him or any other person. The field is large enough without me going outside of it. The reason why I said no other person could do Christ’s miracles was this,: If the miracles proved the Divinity of Christ, I think they ought to prove the Divinity of any one that would surpass him in those miracles. Instead of saying, “ And that ” no other person could do them, I ought to have pot the word “there-, fore” in place of “and that” at the beginning of the sentence, as I did not mean to say Mr Hamilton said it, I only meant that was the inference I took from it. I do not wish it to be thought that I am discussing the Divinity of Christ, because that ia a aubjebt I have no wish to enter on, and I would not have mentioned it again had it not been to explain my seeming unfairness in my other letter. > Mr Hamilton has kindly answered ray challenge to him to prove “that spiritualism produces nothing but moral ruin.” He says, “In the American summary of news we read : The leading spiritualist, Mrs M. H. Burton, went into a trance at a seance given in Philadelphia on June 22nd, and died without giving a sign.” Mr Hamilton says; “Volumes written on the subject could not be more conclusive than this,” I scarcely know how to thank Mr Hamilton for such a candid admission, because, coming from an educated man, wo know we have the whole of the proofs, as he acknowledges “ Volumes written on the subject could not be more conclusive.” But 1

must call Mr Hamilton's attention to tb« fact thut all we see and do must go in the same boat with spiritualism, as we have people dying under all the following cir« cumstances :—Sleeping, eating, walking, swimming, riding, driving, under chloroform, while playing chess, draughts, cricket, football, and even dying in the pulpit. In the latter case the person it said to havo died in harness. No doubt he died in harness, but no more so than the man filling a load of gravel, or * v , medium while being used by the spirit world. Apologising for again trespassing on your valuable space, I am, etc., . Andbkw Gibson. Burnside, Temuka, August 2nd, 1886.
