At Auckland, in the case of Robert Filzioy Bolton, charged with inducing Mr Hudson Williamson, the Crown Solicitor, to endorse a promissory .note for £2OO by means of false pretences, the jury acquitted the prisoner by direction of Mr Justice Gillies, who ruled the transaction, though a fraudulent one, did not disclose a false pretence. In discharging the prisoner, the judge said that the transaction disclosed gross fraud on the part of the prisoner and his wife. The case closed the criminal session. The adversary of the battle of the Boyne was observed at Auckland with greater eclat than usual. The Grand Orange Lodge met on Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday special religious services took place. At Rotorua a severe shock of earthquake was felt at 4.30 on Saturday afternoon. The volcanoes were discharging large volumes of smoke and steam all day. Judging from the direction, a new one appears to have broken out near the Patro ranges, but uo report of it has been received. A party of four tourists, just arrived, intend to make a thorough exploring tour and proceed overland to Wellington. At a meeting of the Grand Orange Lodge of Auckland district, a resolution of sympathy with the brethren in Ireland was passed, and ordered to be transmitted to the Grand Lodge of Ireland. A further resolution expressive of unswerving fidelity to the Crown and constitution, and deprecating any change tending to weaken the unity of the empire, was passed and directed to be forwarded to the Marquis of Salisbury. The same resolution was also carried unanimously at a largely attended public meeting on Monday night. It is understood that Government have received a cablegram that their application about H.M.S. Miranda has been mentioned to the proper authorities.

The battle of the Boyno was celebrated on Monday by the Orange Lodges of Wellington by a social gathering. On Sunday special religious services were conducted by the Rev. J. H. Elliott, who strongly denounced Home Rule proposals for Ireland, and quoted from eminent writers in support of hifl arguments. The Mararoa with the June English mails left San Francisco for Auckland on the 3rd inst., being time-table date. The Alameda with the June colonial mails arrived at San Fracisco from Auckon the 11th iust., one day in advance of time-table date. A wrestling match for £25 a side and the championship of New Zealand, between Hudson, the present champion, and Roach, of Wellington, took place at Wellington on Monday night. The former conceded the latter one throw, the match to be the best three out of five throw?. Hudson secured three falls and won.
