GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Board’s office on Tuesday. Members present—Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), J. Kelland, L. Grant, and F. R, Flatmau. A little was read from Mr R. H. Postlethwaite apologising for non attendance, and also asking on behalf of the Geraldine Cheese Factory for permission to hold their next annual meeting on July 30th in the Board’s office.—The application was granted. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. TENDERS. The following tenders were then opened ; Contract No. 184—Footbridge, shingling, etc., near B irker’s, Waitohi Road ; J. Webb, £24 ; W. Fletcher, £lB 19s; J. Fietield, £l6 (accepted). Contract No, 185—Shingling Toomey’s Road, Kakahu: J. Webb, £23 ; B. Truraper, £lB 16s; A. Best, £lB ; W. Lewis, £lB ;T. Markham, £1512s 6d ;E. Murphy, £l3 15s (accepted). Contract No. 186 —Shingling and formation, near Orari Bridge : M. Gorkery, £6O ;P, Burk £56 ; S. Gould, £44 ; T. Markham, £4l IGs; R. Rae and Co,, £4l; M. Lawlor, £6O (accepted). Contract No. 187— Formation, drains, e*c., near Four Peaks Station ; M. Burke, £25; J. Webb, £l9 19s; B. Truraper, £2719a ;J. Fiefield, £l9 8a; K. Qaaid, £l4 19a (accepted); E. Murphy £l4 15a. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read From the Crown Lands office, Wellington, acknowledging receipt of the Board’s letter, asking that the moneys due on deferred payment lands be forwarded. From Mr 0. G. Bradley, Hilton, asking the Board to fill in the drain running through his paddock, which the Board had cut, and open the drain down the aide of the road. Also, calling the attention of the Board to the state of the drain near Mr Leary’s.—Decided to fill in the drain, and the Overseer to report oh the drain near Leary’s. From the Rev. J. Preston, on behalf of John Rowe, asking that he might be allowed to occupy one of the Board’s cottages free, as he had a large family and was unable to gain a livlehood. —Granted for three months.

From Mr J. Crafer, asking the Board to have the ceiling of the cottage be was renting from the Board lined.—Decided to do the work, provided the tenant would consent to pay an advance in rent of Is 6 d per week. From Mr G. South, asking the Board to clear the drain running past his land, and offering to keep it clean for £1 per year. —Granted for a definite period. From Mr A. Metcalf, Orari Bridge, asking permission to cart stones from his land on to the road adjoining.—Permission granted. From Mr Kelegher, Pleasant Valley, asking the Board to request Mr D. Guthrie to cut the gorse on his property ar it was very high, and was dangerous to his (Kelegher’s) house in case of fire. —Decided to ask Mr Guthrie to trim the fence opposite Mr Kelegher’s house. From MrT. Wigley, enclosing a letter from the Hon. P, Buckley, in which be declined to give a legal opinion on the matter of gates on roads ; also, stating that he had had a conversation with the Hon. J. B, A. Acland who did net think it advisable to amend the Act bearing upon the subject this session.— Mr Flatm in thought Mr Wigley had gone outside the question altogether. The Hoard only wanted him to get a legal opinion on the matter, and if Mr Wigley had gone to an eminent lawyer, ho would, no doubt, have been supplied with a legal opinion, He objected to people wasting the Board’s time in this manner.—Mr Grant quite agreed with Mr Flatman. — Decided that as Mr Wigleyjhad not carried out the resolution of the Board re obtaining a legal opinion, the letter bo acknowledged, and Mr Wigley be referred to the resolution passed by the Board at their meeting two months ago. From Mr Stubbs, Clerk to the Geraldine County Council, informing the Board that the amount of their contribution to the Charitable Aid Board was £ll9 11s lid, and asking the Board to pay the same into the Charitable Aid Board’s account in the Bank of New Zealand, Tiraaru. Members stated that they would like to know upon what basis the amount was arrived —Decided to pay the amount and adr the Board how they arrived at the cotmpatation. From Mr J. Lewis, asking the Board to remove his name from the rate roll for Mr Mee’s land at Four Pouka, as it was now rented by Mr Campbell.—To be seen to. From Mr J. Fietield and others, asking the Board to erect a stock bridge on the Woodbury and Rangitata Road near Mr Donkin’s property.—The Board declined to accede to the application. From Mr N. Longney, Winchester, asking the Board to grant him material to fence the reserve he had lately leased from the Board.—Decided to provide the the material, the fence to be erected to the satisfaction of the Overseer.

From Mr 0. E, Sherrratt, Clerk to the Geraldine Town Board, acknowledging receipt of the Board’s letter re repairing the footbridge over the Waihi river, and forwarding the Board’s resolution thereon, namely, “ That the bridge being outside the town boundary the Town Board could not entertain the application.”—Decided, that as the Town Board would not contribute half the cost of repairing, to insert an advertisement in each paper circulating in the district that the Geraldine Road Boi-rd is not responsible for any accidents which may occur to persons using the Geraldine footbridge. From Mr Pitman, Steward of Education Reserves, accepting the Board’s offer of £7 per acre for two acres out of reserve No 1191 for a gravel pit, under the Public Works Act, and asking the Board to forward a cheque for the same. From the Property Tax Commissioner, Christchurch, covering the copy of a valuation roll.

From J. H. Baker, Christchurch, acknowledging the return of the map upon which the roads in the district had been marked. SMALL BIRDS NUISANCE. From several schoolmasters in the district, expressing their willingness, to purchase eggs and birds from their scholars, and leaving the amount of remuneration to the Board.—Decided to leave the matter till next meeting of the Board. From Mr C. B. Eichbaum, Timaru, advising the Board that he had forwarded strychnine for poisoning purposes, and offering to supply the Beard with, strychnine for 5s per ounce, if he received the whole of Board’s orders.—Decided to leave the matter till next meeting of the Board. -; v DEPUTATIONS. ' Mr Sharp waited upon the Board requested that they would take steps to prevent the approach to the bridge over the Kakahu river being washed away.— Decided to attend to the matter. Mr DeKei.zy asked the Board to clear the flax off the swamp road, running pa -t his farm, as he found it difficult to cut and burn his fences.—The application was assented to. Mr Maxwell attended to explain with regard to the traffic upon the road on which the disputed gates were, bung, and also to ask for the road to be deviated, as it would ease the grade and be a great convenience. He also asked for a plank to be placed across the creek ..that ran in front of his house.— lt waft decided to def»r taking action in the matter until Mr Wigley’a return, and in the meantime the Overseer to report. upon the work proposed to be done. Mr Moore, on behalf of Mr Wigley, attended to know the decision of the Board re the disputed gates ; also, asking if, la the event of the gates having to be removed, the Board would give him.tlme to erect fences. The Board stated the decision they had come to in. the matter. Mr W reathall asked for a road to be formed to his section, No. 32,302.—' The matter was deferred for the Overater to report upon. ■ Mr C. Batty asked permission to ereet a fence across a road near. his . section (No. 11), Orari Township, for ene week. He stated the ratepayers had offered no objection.—Decided to allow the feace to bo erected with a slip-panel, provided the neighbors did not object, and ' petitioner took all responsibility. Mr Kelland asked for a plank to be placed across a small stream on the Gapes’ Yalley Road, near the Geraldine Dairy Factory.—lt was decided to have the plank placed. MISCELLANEOUS. It having been reported to the Board that the Mount Peel Road Board were removing the soil from tho road leading to Tripp’s cutting, it was resolved to call tho attention of the Mount Peel Road Board to it. Mr FI at man movsd—“That the Board request the member for the district to get the Road Board Act amended to make it legal to divide, the,road district info wards for election purposes only.”— Mr Kelland seconded the motion, and said he quite agreed with Mr Fiatman ae to dividing for election pu rposes’only.— Carried. The plans for the new pound and caretaker's cottage, which had. been prepared by Mr D. McKenzie, were placed; on tho table for inspection. , "w Mr Elatman proposed, Mr Grant se- .JT conded. and it was carried—“ That £6OOO be deposited with the Bank of New Zetland for twelve months, and £7OO deposited for three months with the same Bunk from deposit doe July 20th 1885 ; also, that £SOOO falling due on July 15 at the Bank of New South Wales be redeposited with that Bank for a period of twelve months at current rates.” RATE. Proposed by Mr Fiatman, seconded by MrQrard, and carried—“ That a rate of one half-penny in the £on all rateable property iu th* Geraldine Road Board District be now levied and made.” Mr Shiers was appointed collector for the present year. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer’s report stated that several small contracts had been completed ; that the road near Four Peaka required repairing; that to reduce the cuttings on the Pleasant Yalley Road would coat about £—; that several repairs were required on Morrison’s Road, Waihi; that the fences round the Board’s reserves needed trimming; that a abort length of road near Mr South’s required shingling ; that he had colored the roads formed and shingled, and marked the various roads, on the district map, as requested by the Chief Surveyor, and returned the mip to Christchurch; that he had prepared tho rate roll and given ■< the necessary notice of the Board’s inten- ? tion to levy a rate of one half-penny in the £ for the ensuing year. The Overseer also brought under the notice of th® Board the fact that Mr \yilcbx had been in the habit of putting his horses In th® Board’s plantation and gravel reserve! near the Geraldine Dairy Factory, and that he had that morning sent a man to the plantation before daylight, when Mr Wilcox was in tho habit of taking th® horses out. The man had found a mob of horses in the reserve and brought them to the pound, As the plantation was securely fenced forcible entry must have been effected. He asked the Board to express an opinion on the matter. The Board decided that the cuttings on the Pleasant Yalley Road should stand over till next meeting ; that Mr Wilcox be given notice that if his horses b® found trespassing again heavy damages will be claimed. Some of the work* mentioned were ordered to stand over till the next meeting, and it was decided that others be done. ACCOUNTS, Accounts to the amount of £451 10s Id x were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned till August 10. '
