£IO,OOO of the Costley bequest ie to be used In building addition* to the Anckhmd hospital. A ten-roomed house at Rothesay, Dunedin, owned by Mr Hayes, brewer, wt.e burned down lust Thursday night. The house and its contents war* insured for £3OO.
A fire at East Gore on Friday morning destroyed the ProvincUl Hotel, Messrs Aitkin and Burrows’ butcher shop, and two cottages belonging to Mr G. Milne, The fire started in the hotel, beginning at the inside chimney. Mr Milne’s cottage* were insured for £l5O, and the butchei’a shop for £l5O, both in the New Zealand office. The hotel is said to bo insured for £llOO.
Taire Rape, a Maori, has been arrested at Lucas Creak, Auckland, for criminal assault on a half-caste woman.
It has transpired lhatOaffrey, the Great Barrier Island murderer, bad purchased a Jurie’s chart of the west coast of South America before leaving Auckland. At the annual meeting of the Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Christchurch, on Saturday afternoon, a dividend of 7 per cent was declared. The s.s. Waliabi, coal laden, was stranded while attempting to leave Greymouth harbor on Saturday night. She is apparently uninjured, but us she has been thrown very far on to the beach, to launch her will be a d.fficult and expensive matter.
