London, June 27

Spofforth has quite recovered from the injury to his hand, sustained in the match with the Gentlemen of England on the 3rd inst,

The ball organised by the prominent colonists now in. England was held at Guildhall last evening. Pour thousand guests were present, and the affair was of a most brilliant character.

It is announced that Sir Saul Samuel, Sir Arthur Blyth, Sir Dillon Bell, and Mr Selwyn have been created Companions of the Order of the Bath for services in connection with the Colonial and Indi»n Exhibition. Sir P. Cuuliffe Owen, Secretary to the Royal Commission of the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, aud Mr Hodgson have been created Knights Commanders of the Bath. Sir Samuel Davenport, of South Au>tr«lia, Professor Von Haast, of New Zealand, Mr J. F. Garrick, of Queensland, and Mr Graham Berry, of Victoria, have been created Knight Commanders of St. Michael and St. George ; and Mr Joseph Bosisto, of Victoria, a Companion of the same Order.

A vessel, just arrived at Boston, l reports that a barque, supposed to be the Arklow, from Australia to Montreal, signalled here, and it is reported that the captain had deserted bis ship in an open boat. It is supposed ho feared arrest, The American branch of the Land League has sent Mr Parnell £12,000. Colonel Sleep and Captain Powell, of Victoria, members of the Australian rifle team, have arrived in London. The team are in good health.

In a skirmish between Dacoits and the British troops, nine of the latter were killed and 24 wounded. The statement that Beach had been challenged by Gandaur is untrue. Mr Prince has opened an Emigration Enquiry Office in the Exhibition buildings.

Tenders for the Invercargill Municipal loan of £70,000, bearing 4| per cent, interest, were opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to be double the amount required. Tenders at £99 received in full. The minimum fixed was £9B.

ihe Queen has asked Sir Saul Samuel to convey her best thanks to the Sydney City Council for their congratulatory greetings. Mr Coutts Lindsay is projecting a scheme to send a collection of pictures, the work of British artists, for sale in the colonies. The Committee of the Grosvenor Gallery have approved of the idea.

Mr Bosisto, one of the New South Wales Exhibition Commissioners, has declined the proffered honor of C.M.G. He considers such honors unsatisfactory to colonist!.

Her Majesty the Queen has signified her approval of the Hon. W. B. Dalley, Attorney-General of New South Wales, being sworn in as a Privy Councillor. The Admiralty will place a vessel at the disposal of colonists visiting Ihe Exhibition for the purpose of taking a cruise in the English Channel.

It is affirmed in Paris that another batch of recidivistes will be sent to New Caledonia in the autumn.

The Prince of Wales has laid the foundation stone of a People's Palace. Admiral Seblenitz, Governor of the German territory in New Guinea, has been authorised to exercise judicial functions there.

A large party of the visitors from the colonists are now on a tour througboit England. On visiting Oxford tc-day, they were received by the Mayor and the Rev. R. Jowitt, Vice-Chancellor of the University, by whom they were escorted through the principal college.

Austria has communicated with Russia, warning lier against taking independent action in regard to Bulgaria.

Ottawa, June 28.

The Government has announced that its policy towards the United States in regard to the dispute which has arisen in connection with the Canadian fisheries is unchanged, and that the Treaty of 1828 will be strictly adhered to.

Sydney, June 28. Arrived, yesterday atternoou—Wakatipu, from Wellington. The barque Clifton, beund for Dunedin, has returned to Newcastle, having suffered damage in a heavy gale which she encountered.

Hobart, June 29. The Tasmanian Parliament has been dissolved.
