LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

The Council met at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday, but after some formal business adjourned as a mark of respect to the late member, the Hon. T. Henderson. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The Houbo met at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday. After several questions had been replied to the Bouse went into Committee of Supply, and Deficiency Bills to tbe extent of £375,000 were renewed on the motion of Sir Julius Vogel. Sir George Grey presented petitions from 1800 electors and settlers against the Contagious Diseases Act, from 763 electors of Auckland praying for redistribution of representation, and from a resident at North Shore, Anokland, asking for an enquiry into the conduct of certain Government officials at Rotorua during tbe recent eruptions. The Coal Mines Bill was further considered in Committee and reported with amendments. The House went into Committee on the Local Bodies Loans Bill. A lengthy discussion took placo on the clause empowering local authorities to borrow money for erecting school buildings, « hich ultimately was struck out. Major Atkinson moved that in clause 8 the words "if any" relating to Sinking Fund ho struck out, and Mr Pyke moved that the words " Sinking Fund, if any," should be struck out. Both amendments were lost. Clause 7, that the first year's iatereßt may be paid out of loin, was opposed by Major Atkinson, Colonel Trimble and Mr Montgomery, but was passed. The House rose at 5.30 and resumed at 7.30.

Sir Julius Vogel moved the addition of a new clause to the Local Bodies Loan Bill exempting Crown and Native lands from liability to special rating for losdb, and after debate this was carried.—Mr Garriok got another clause added enabling any local body to anticipate one year's rates. —The Bill then passed.

A number of amendments were proposed in the interpretation clause, but none were carried except the deletion of Bubsection 6, providing for building schools out of lonns.Sj Clause 13, fixing amount to be advanced in any one year, was postponed, and the remaining clauses were passed. The House went into Committee on the Counties Bill. Clause 181 and 189 were amended to enable conn lies to borrow up to six times the amount of one year's rates. The remainder of the Bill pasted with minor amendments, but notice was given of some new clauses, aDd one or two were postponed for further consideration. The House rose at 1.20 a.m.
