A man named Mitchell WBi eommltiuw. for trial at Napier on Monday on four charges of forgery a 3 well as sentenced to five months' imprisonment for obtaining goods under false pretences.
Replying to Tawhaio'a request for the establishment of a Maori Council, the Native Minister writes that he is unable to grant the request, ns he fails to Bee that such a council would in any way ba beneficial to the Maoris.
The steamer Matai, on the last trip from Auckland to Wellington sighted the Russian warship on the 4th instant north of Gisboroe.
The medals and certificates gained by the Dunedin exhibitors at the Industrial Exhibition at Wellington were presented at a public meeting on Monday evening. A resolution was passed urging that the next exhibition should bo held in Dunedin.
The Dunedin City Council have decided to hold an enquiry as to who tv as responsible for the recent blasting accident, and under whose control the works were. The Jlinister for Public Works has intimated that no more relief works will be provided at Dunedin fur the unemployed. Small contracts will be let, provision being made for employing the men who are at present on relief works. In case of the men refusing this, (he Government will not further employ them.
Mr JohneOD, of Berwick, Otago, was severely injured while following the hounds on Saturday. Ho fell at a fence, and a rider, who vas following, jumped ou him.
The Te Anau which left Auckland on Tuesday for Sydney took 121 steerage passengers, 74 from Auckland, and the rest from tlie South. A large number vvfcie bound for Kimbeiley. Between Saturday night and Monday morning the New Zealand Clothing Factory was broken into, and clothing valued at over £4O stolen. The thief made a hole in the back door with an augur sufficiently large to admit his hand, He then unlocked the door from the inside.
