RAUKAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The quarterly meeting of the Baukapuka Licensing Bench was held at the Oourthonee, Geraldine, yeeterday. Present—Mr W. U. Slack (Chairman), Dr Fish, and Messrs O. G. Tripp and W. Mailin. The minntee of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Thomas Farrell applied for a license for the Crown Hotel, Geraldine.

Mr Lynch appeared on behalf of the applioant, and Hr White appeared on behalf of Mr Johnstone, the proprietor of the building. Mr White stated that according to the lease tinder which Mr Farrell holds the hotel, he was to execute 'all necessary repairs. At the last sitting of the Licensing Committee they had informed the licensee that he would have to snbstitnte an iron roof for the shingle one, which was now in a very defeetive atate. Mr Johnstone had promised to pay the sum of £lO towards getting the roof pnt on. The roof bad never been pnt on, and the proprietor wished the Committee to compel Mr Farrell to put it on*

The police reported thet the management end furnishing of the house was satisfaetory in every way, the only fault they bad to find being the bad condition of the roof. Mr Lynch pointed out that the only reason why the licensee bad not put the new roof on, which he had promised to do, was that when he bad made that promise be believed it would cost about £3O, but upon making enquiries he found it would cost nearer £|o. Thomas Baxter was called and stated that he had had Vf years’ experience in the carpentering trade. He had examined the roof of the Crown Hotel and bad found some leakages. He had written a report on the state of the roof (report read), and in his opinion it would post from £45 to £65, according to the quality of the material used, to put a new roof on the building. The licensee stated that his sole reason for not complying with the order of the bench was that he had, on the spur of the moment, thought that the new roof would not cost more than £i|o, which with the £lO from the owner would have only been £2O for him (the licensee) to pay. He had found, however, that it would cost nearly £6O to put the roof on. Mr White stated that he was not there to prevent the house being licensed, as that would make it valueless to his client. He simply wanted the Bench to compel the lioeneee to perform what he bad already promised. The Committee retired for a few minutes, and upon returning said they had decided to adjourn the present meeting till the 28 th inst, and the license would be granted then if the iron roof were put on in the meantime; or, if it eould not be finished by that time, if each progress had been made with the work as to convince the Committee that the licensee fnlly intended to carry out the work.

Renewals of Hotel licenses were granted to Robert Taylor, Geraldine Hotel; Daniel. Moliraith, Bush Inn, Geraldine; David Denoon, Bangitata Bridge Hotel ; and •ooomedation licenses to Thomas Clayton, Star of the South Hotel, Bangitata; Thomas Dooley, Woodbury Hotel; and Jane Taylor Hilton Hotel. All the Hotels in the Geraldine township were made 11 o’clock lioeosee. The licensee of the Bangitata Bridge Hotel applied to have his license fee reduced to £5, which wae granted. He wsa also granted permission to keep a post office at ths Hotel.

Mr B. H. Pesrpoint was granted a whole tale liosnse.

It was resolved that eseh booth on a race course should psy a separate license fee. It was also resolved to allow publiosns to put their street lights out at 11.80. This being all the business the Committee adjourned till the 28th inst.
