AN EXPLANATION.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— Allow me to correct an error, which is calculated to mislead, and give a wrong idea to, many persons who are in the habit of taking ginger ale as a cooling beverage. You state in your issue of yesterday that the late unfortunate Thos, Raine got spirits of wine to use in the manufacture of ginger ale. I beg to deny the sUtsment, Ginger ale is simply an »rated beverage flavored with ginger exactly ai lemonade is flavored vtilh lemon—without the slightest particle of any spirits whatever, What poor Raine -could have wanted with spirit# o| wine
was beat known to himself, bat the fact of him telling Mr Cook with a smile he had drank it speaks for itself. Those who know anything of chemistry are aware that spirits of wine is a component part of all tinctures used by chemists, but to. use it for -the purpose you state is perfectly incorrect. The immense quantity of ginger ale ustd, both at Home and in the colony, since its introduction some four years ago proves it to be the most wholesome of summer drinks,— I am, etc.,
J, B, Binley,
[The statement made in our last issue to the effect that the deceased used spirits of wine in bis trade was correct, as our correspondent will see by the evidence given by Messrs T. Turner and R. S. Cook, at the inquest.—The Editoh.]
