The potato beiug large had afforded sufficient nourishment to promote the growth of the young ones. THE VbSXNIK.— Last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning various stories wereafloat in Wellington regarding the Russian i«>an-of-war. It is said she hoisted a black ball on going out, which was the sign of punishment of death, and rumor had it that two men were to be shot for refusal of duty. On Wednesday morning there was a further addition to the effect that one had been shot before entering the harbor. What gave color to the story was the fact that none of the men were allowed ashore during her stay, and no steamers Were allowed to go alongside. Enquiry, however, proves that she had no black signal of any kind hoisted, and the pilot states that when be left he had neither heard of (he matter nor saw any prepaiation or signal of any kind. The rumor had this much truth that two men guilty of desertion were to be punished, but all they were likely to get, according to one of the Russian officers, w»s six weeks’ imprisonment. The Vestnik went through the Straits, and will probably sail round North Cape tp Auckland. One of the torpedo corps joined her ot electrician. Both the Russian and Japanese warships took away largo supplies of fresh meat with them, more than twice the amount an English ship is accustomed to take.
