MR GLADSTONE’S IRISH PROPOSALS.

London, May 27.

At a meeting of the Liberal party hold to-day, Mr Gladstone announced that he was prepared to modify those clauses in the Home Rule measure which prohibited the retention of the Irish members in the House of Commons, provided that the Bills were read a second time, Consideration of the proposals in Committee would then be postponed until the autumn session of Parliament. Mr Chamberlain was not present at the meeting, Mr Chamberlain has written a letter to the papers, in which he expresses a hope that mutual concessions and forbearance will have the effect of reuniting the Liberal party.

The Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, referring to Mr Gladstone’s Irish scheme, protests that the desertion of the Ulster men will rendw the scheme dangerous, and that such proposals are the design of madmen.

A meeting of the Liberal party was held to-day, when Mr Gladstone announced, as a concession on his Irish proposals, the retention of Irish members for Imperial questions. Mr Chamberlain and other Radicals were absent, as a protest against th<* exclusion of Moderates from the meeting.

Ine Radicals are deserting Mr Chamberlain, who it is expected will himself support the second reading of the Irish Laud Purchase Bill, which is already assured.

It is generally believed that the second reading of the Homo Rule Bill is now secured, Mr Gladstone proposes to admit the Irish members to discussions relative to Imperial questions.

Parliament will probably be prorogued as usual at the end of July, and an amended Irish Bill will be introduced in the autumn session, which will be held in October, TELEGRAPHIC NEWS. The Auckland bootmakers estimate that the new tarriff will increase the cost of production 7 per oeut. Rederick McGregor, a settler of Whangarei, (Auckland), suddenly aesaulted Constable McDowell, of the water police, on Saturday with a cudgel, under the delusion that the constable had been chasing him through the “ woods.” McGregor was medically examined and sent to the lunatic asylum. The constable was severely hit on the head and had his fingers bitten in arresting the lunatic, aided by another constable. The Auckland syndicate whieh went to Samoa in connection with the litigation of the Cornwall-McArthur difficulty, returned by the mail steamer. McArthur won the case. An appeal has been lodged. The captain and officers of the Russian war ship were entertained at dinner by the members of the Wellington Club. At the licensing meeting next week it is expected that one hotel in each of Cook and Thorndon ward* (Wellington), will be closed.

A case of garrotting occurred at Christchurch last Saturday night. A man named Edward Desmond was stuck up on the South Bolt by four men who held and went through his pockets. Two of them, Richard Chamberlain, and Frederick Porter, both well-known to the police, have been arrested.
