ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 4The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone informed the House of Commons to-day that the time allowed by the Powers for an answer from Greece to their ultimatum regarding disarmament had expired, and no definite reply had been received. Mr Gladstone added that the previous reply was indequate and unsatisfactory. Mr Murray, of Sydney, has gained Chancellor Gainsford’s prize for Latin Greek verse. May 5. Tim European Powers will present a fi' -n note to Greece to-day on the. subject nf disarmament. Captain La Cascade has been appointed Governor of Tahiti, and Captain a. Le Pouch, Governor of Now Caledonia, has been removed to Guadeloupe, Nelson, the New South Wales oarsman, will probably receive the Koyal Humane Society’s medal for courageously saving a boy from drowning. Prince Alexander of Roumelia will pay a visit to the Sultan. The appointment of a successor to Bishop Moorehouse has been deferred for a fortnight. The first meeting of the conference to take into consideration the question of the protection of cables in time of war will meet at Paris on the I2th inst. It is unlikely that Sir Arthur Blyth, the representative of South Australia, will be able to be present. The Queen has accepted a number of photographs of New Guinea by Landt and Co. Mr R, 0. Baker leaves for South Australia to-morrow. The tenders which he has received for the federal mail service have not been made public, Cairo, May 5. Advices from the frontier state that the Mshdist Arabs are massing in large numbers in the vicinity of Dongola. Calcutta, May 5. A force of Shik police, (consisting of 2000 men, has started for Mandalay. In spite of the vigilance of the British troops, another immense fire lias occurred in that city. Ottawa, May 4. The question of Home Rule for Ireland is now under discussion in the Canadian Parliament, AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Melbourne, May 5. It is announced that the vacmcy caused by the retirement of Mr Justice Molesworth has been filled by the appointment of Mr Webb to the Judicial Bench.’ The case of Bell v. Clarke will have to be reargued, owing to the retirement of Judge Molesworth. The Manapoun arrived mis morning from the Bluff. Sydney, May 6, The negotiations which have been in progress for the purpose of bringing about a rapprochement between Sir Henry Parkos and Sir John Robertson by their respective followers have completely failed. Steps are being taken to secure • suitable centenary celebration of the colony, which will occur in January 1888, _____
