Wheat is salej|b|« at quotations, but barley and oats (jjrehard'fo quit, froth 1 haying an easier tendency' among buyers. ’ Cables from Sydney indicate that the Government are abopt putting ph protective dpties on certain New Zealand products. This is almost sure to unsettle the markets here for a time, , Tuscan wheat is firm at 3s 5d to 3ss£d ; Hunters’ and pearl are saleable at 3s4d to 3s 4jd; shrivelled, 3s to 3s 2d; broken wheat is bard to obtain at from 2# 8d to 2a lid,.. Oats- are weak. It is

difficult to get 2s Id for prime milling ; short feed, 2s to 2s o£d ; long kindf, Is 101 ta Is lid. Barley is gradually getting lower. J.t is now difficult to obtain over 3a 4d for choice parcels while good malting ranges from 3s to 3s 2d ; feed sorts find an outlet in the country districts for pig feed at Is lOd to 2s. Beans have been selling freely during the week at 2s 9J to 2s lOd. Peas— The demand is rather easier ; blues are worth 3s 9d to fa ; other kinds, 3s to 8i 3d. Ryegrass—Buyers have not beerquite ao keen ; machine-dressed is aellii'g at 5* t'> 5s 6d ; clean parcels from farmers at 3» 9d to fa 6d ; inferior kindf, io to 3i 6d. Cocksfoot—The market is ftagnant, buyers not cariog to operate at ruling price*. Dairy Produce The market is disarranged for tho time being on account of the Sydney tar.ff, and values «t the moment are not so goo t as last week; prime bi?ttor beine; 101 <o lid ; cheese, to Gd, according to size and quality. The above prices are for delivery f.0.b.; Lyttelton. i CHRISTOHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington Yards on Wednesday large number of stock yarded and the usual attendance of buyerß, Fat Cattle— A large supply. Demand very alow. A large proportion turned out unsold. Steers sold at from £5 5« to £7 2a 6d. In one instance £7 16s 6d was reached. Heifers from £3 17s 6d to £6, being from 17a to 18a per ICOibc. Store CattleVery few yarded. No lines sold or offered to affect quotations, which, therefore, remain unaltered. A large number of dairy stock offered. Demand not up to late markets ; cows, near calviug, from £5 5s to £9 per head. Fat Sheep—Not, a large entry. Demand fairly good. Values Bhow a slight advance on late rates. Crossbred wethers sold at 7s 9d to 10«, and up to 13s per head ; crossbred ewes, 6s to 0s 6d ; merino wethers, fa to 4s 9d per bead, being from l|d to lfl per lb, according to quality. Storw Sheep—A very large entry. No alteration to record in either demand or values. Lines of lambs sold at 2s 6d to 3a lid; crossbred ewes from Is 8d to 3s per head ; merino ewea from 8d to Is 3d. Pig Market—A fairly good entry, demand certainly a shade better. Stores sold at 6i 6d to 16% porkers Ifa 6d to 28», and baconers up to 40» each. DTJNEDIH STOCK MARKETS. At the Bumside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted : Fat Cattle—At the Butnaide Tarda on Wednesday a medium supply was yarded —viz., 168 head—the larger proportion of which were good quality, and the remainder medium and light weights. Id consequence of the limited supply the salts taken all through showed a good demand, and every lot was ao'd. At the , opening, prices were about the same as last week, but as they progressed a shade better prices Tere obtained. Prime bullocks brought from £8 5s to £9 12< 6d ; good do, £6 10s to £8; medium, £5 10s to £6 5s ; light, £4 10s to £5 ss.—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr Wm. Quion (Makikihi), 6 bullocks at from £7 7« 6d to £9 ss.

Fat 3heep—The number penned consisted of 1543, of which, excepting 100 merinos, the balance were erosabreds. The merinos were of medium quality, while the crossbreds were fair to good quality mutton. Competition waa brisk throughout the sale for good wethers and young ewes, and an improvement in prices waa obtained, but for old ewes and inferior quality prices were «bout the same. Best crossbred wethers broeght from 83 to 9s 9d ; others, 6* 9d to 78 9d ; crossbred ewes, 6s 6d to 83 3d medium do, 4s 9d to 6s 3d ; merinos, 2a td to 4s 3d-—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr Thomas Mitchell (Wnshdyke), 64 crossbred ewes lit from 5s to 6s 3d ; for Mr Whi. M'Leod (W«iraate), 68 erossbreds from 7s 91 to 8a 9d ; for Mr M. Studholme (Waimate Estate), 63 crossbred wethers at from 8s 6d to 9s 3d, and 64 crossbred ewes at from 7e 3d to 7s 9d.

Fat Lambs—46B were penned, but the moat of them were scarcely fit for ihe butcher. The prices were 6s 9d to 7b 9d ; others, 3s to 4s.—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Qo sold for Mr Andrew Mouat (Waimate), 81 at 5s 9d, . Fat Pigs—lsinety-two yarded and so'd, with active competition, at —for baconers, 28b to 42s ; porkers, 17a to 26» ; suckers and slips, 7s fid to 16s. Store Sheep—Several lines have lately changed hands for boiling-down purposes, at prices averaging about la per head, hut for stocking purposes the demand is weak. Horse Market—Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows: —There still exists a good demand for heavy young draughts (especially for these with which i trial in shafts is given) and upstanding hghf-harneas horses, but weedy sorts are difficut to move, A limited number came forward for our sale last Saturdav, 65 head of all deceptions being booked, and nearly all of these belonged to dealers. About one-half of them changed hands at current rates. We quote firstdraughts at from £25 to £27; medium, £ls to £2O; good strong saddle and light-harness horses, £ls to £2O ; medium, £8 to £l2 ; light and £2 (o £5.

Chaff—Good quality, £3 15s ; ordinary, £3 7s 6d to £3 10s. Potatoes—-Stocks are accumulating, and the demand is limited. Derwents, £3 15s, with little business doing. Butter—Fresh, 9d to lOd ; salt, 9d to 101. Cheese is more plentiful; prices, s|l to 6d. Eggs—ln very short supply at Is Bd. (See Fourth Page )
