Accounts to the amount of £73 10s 2d were passed for payment. COSBESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered

From Mr O. P. McCallunr-, on behalf of Mrs McNair, applying for soma timber for a crossing into her land, as the present one was unsafe.—Granted.

From the Paymaster General, Wellington, stating that the sum of £216 6s had been placed to the credit of the Board, being 75 per cent of the subsidy under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, 1885. —The Chairman said that if lie understood rightly the amount of the subsidy was paid in equal instilments to the County Pound) and tfod Board, so the Board would have a further sum of over £2OO to receive from the County Council and something mote

from the Government. As they could only claim subsidy on the rates collected, it would be as well to got them In at once. —The Clerk was requested to make efforts to get the accounts in at once.

From Mr J. Sperrey, Property Tax Cemmiaaioner, stating that he had forwarded statement of values of properties in the Temuka Road District, and requesting that it be deposited at the office of the local body for public inspection. From Mr F. W. Stubbs, Clerk to County Council, applying for total valuation of Road and Town Districts, —Information had been supplied. A list of Crown Lands for sale in tho Canterbury District was received, and the Clerk was requested to post ic up in a 1 conspicuous place. From W. C. Barratt, Winchester, forwarding price of 400 4in. bolts, and from Mr J. Jackson, Timaru, forwarding price of kauri timber.— The Chairman explained that after consulting with the Overseer re repairs to the Temuka Bridge, they had concluded that it would be advisable to procure the necessary materials, and call for tenders for the work. This had been done.—The timber alluded to was kauri, and Mr Smith asked whether black pine would not have done.—The Overseer said it would certainly have done, but as the other timber used in the work was kauri, he thought it better that the repairs should bs also executed with that timber.

From Mr A. H. Ross, Dunedin, re repairs to spirit level. From the Property Tax Commissioner, re valuation of sections No. 55 and 56, High Street, Arowhenna. A circular giving the dates of the Land Board meetings in Christchurch was received. [This notice, and the list of Canterbury Grown lands in the market, have been affixed to the wall in the porch attached to the Road Board office-] From W. G. S. Cooper, Colonial Secretary’s office, Wellington, acknowledging receipt of the Board’s letter of Feb. Bth, stating that the Temuka Road and Town District Boards were desirous of combining for tho purpose of more efficiently carrying out the provisions of the Public Health Act 1876, and eqnally dividing the expense attending the same. In reply he stated that at a meeting of the Central Board of Health on the 15th February, it was resolved: That if the Town District Board joins in the application an order shall be made amalgamating the two local bodies into one Local Board of Health, under section 24 of The Public Health Act 1876.—The Chairman said he supposed the matter would have to remain in abeyance until the order was made.

overseer’s report. The following is the Overseer’s report for the month ; “To the Chairman “Sir, —I have the honor to report for the past month as follows : “ Tenders have been called for repairing the Temnka bridge. Very little progress has been made with the contracts in hand. Some slight repairs to various bridges have been done. There are three small bridges that require replacing, viz.: one on Gramond’s road can come out and a ford made in its place, estimated cost £— ; one on Waitohi Terrace road requires replacing with concrete culvert, estimated cost £— ; one on road by Mr F. Barker’s replacing with bridge culvert, cost for labor £—. Two bridges on Epworth road require redecking.—Some timber fcr decking is required.—There is some 12 x 12 in the yard, I would recommend it be cut down the centre and used as girders for small bridges.-—I have, etc., “ F. Archer,” It was decided that the recommendation of the Overseer with regard to the culverts on the Waitohi Terrace road, and on road by Mr JF. Barker’s, should be flven effeet to, that the bridges on the Ipworth road should bo redecked, and that the desirability of replacing a small bridge on Cramond’s road should be further considered.

While the report was being considered the Overseer, in answer to questions, explained that the bridge on the Waitohi Road had been put in about 12 years ago. Girders were placed across the watercourse, the ends resting on tbe soil, and planked, and a quantity of soil thrown on the top of them. The banks were now getting undermined, the girders, which rested, on them might drop in at any time. The bridge near Mr Barker’s was a similar one.

The Chairman said the bridge on the Epworth road was one of those put up by the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works when there was not such heavy traffic as there is now.

With regard to the recommendation re the cutting up of the 12 x 12 timber now lying in the Board’s yard, the Overseer was authorised to ascertain the cost of cutting it, and if the cost is reasonable get the work done.

With regard to the decking, the Overseer was authorised to call for tenders for 7000 feet of black pine of the sizes required. It was remarked that the decking of a great many of the bridges is getting worn, and it is desirable to have always a good supply of decking timber on hand, as it needs to be well seasoned. TENDEES. The only tenders called for were for Contract 55, repairs to tbe Temuka Bridge. For this five tenders were received, viz., W. Fletcher, £lO 10s ; A. Burnett, £l9 9s 6d; Clinch and Lloyd, £l2; R. Latimer, £l2 ; G. Latimer, £9 15s. After considering the tenders it was decided that as the two lowest eligible tenders were equal lots should be drawn. This was done, and as the name of Mr R. Latimer was drawn his tender was accepted. THE LATE MARTIN DUNN’S CONTRACTS. In reply to a question the Overseer said that the sons of the late Martin Dunn had agreed to carry out his contracts. One was partly finished and the other was not yet commenced.

After discussion the Overseer was authorised to conclude an agreement with the Messrs Dunn re the carrying out of the contracts from the time of their father’s decease.

This being all the business the meeting terminated,
