Owing lo an informality in the spelling of the name of one of the temperance candidates at Auckland, and which was not discovered till about noon on Friday, it ia likely there will be a fresh contest in the City South, wh°re the moderates gained the day by three men to two temperance. There is likely to be a scrutiny in the East Ward, The Mongonui School Committee, (Auckland), have substituted swimming for drill in tlie summer.

The handsome new offices which have been erected in Cathedral square, Christchurch, for the Australian Mutual Provident Society were opened on Friday, and the occasion was celebrated by a luncheon, at which Sir W. Fitzherbert presided. In the course of his speech he referred to the satisfactory progress of the Society since it was first established in New Zealand in 1871. He condemned the Government Life Insurance Association for guaranteeing absolute security to policyholders, because it meant, he said, the possibility of increased taxation to the coramnuity.
