FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.

FIRST DAY. Napier, Jan. 27. The Fire Brigade competition to-day attracted a large attendance of the public, over three thousand spectators being present. The arrangements were excellent, and there was no complaint or grumbling on the part of the competing teams. The results of to-day’s competition are as follow ; Hose and Reel Practice, for five men. First prize, a handsome trophy, five gold medals, and £BO cash (presented by the Hawkes Bay sheep farmers), total value £115; second, a trophy, five silver medals; and £lO cash presented by the district Legislators), total value £3O; third, a trophy and £lO cash (presented by the Napier Corporation), total value £2O. Naseby and Ballarat City failed to strike the disc with the first water, and the Spit failed to fix the hydrant properly. Thirty contested and ran in couples until only four men were left, when they ran against time. Ballarat East, 12.2 secs, was first; Wanganui, first representative, 12.4 secs, second; Ballarat City and Wanganui second representatives tied, with 12.6 secs, for third place. In the run off Ballarat City won iu 11.6 secs, making the best time, though taking only third place. SECOND DAY. Hose and Ladder Match, for five men. First prize, value £BS; second, value £2O; third, value £lO. Ballarat City, 36 4-sth secs., 1; Ballarat East, 37 secs., 2; Napier, 38 2-sth secs., 3. Twelve other teams competed. The time of the Timaru team was 47 3-sth secs. The aggregate prizes for the best aggregate time on hose practice, hose and ladder practice, and engine practice, were awarded as follows First, Dunedin City, value 30 guineas; second Ballarat City and Spit, equal, value 10 guineas. Although a steady rain was falling yesterday, it was determined to run off the final contests : - Alarm and Rush, 200 yards —Honslaw (Masterton), 1 ; Schalstadt (Kumara), 2. Only four teams entered. Two of Kumaru and two of Masterton competed, Fireman’s Flat Race, 200 yards— Honalaw (Masterton), 1 ; Copeland (Wanganui), 2 ; Brady (South Dunedin), 3. Consolation Hose and Reel Practice, for five men ; Ist prize £lO, 2nd £6—New Plymouth, 63.35ec5,; Timaru, 65secs.; Auckland, 65secs, The tenth event, Tug of War between blue and red uniforms, ten men in a team, was won by the blues, A banquet was given last night to the visiting teams and delegates of the Association, tables being laid for SOO. The prices and trophies were then distributed, At a meeting of the Fire Brigade Association yesterday it was decided to hold the next conference at Auckland, if a demonstration be 'arranged. The gold medal was voted to ex-Secretary Robinson in recognition of his services.
