H.M.S. Opal arrived at Russell from Hobart and anchored outside the harbor on Sunday night at 8 o’clock. She steamed to the Opui yesterday morning, where she coals to-day, and awaits instructions from the Admiral. In reply to the Inst cablegram sent to England by the Government re the action of Germany at Samoa, the Secretary of State for the colonies cables that Germans have given an assurance that they have no intention of annexing the island. The Minister of Public Works returned to Wellington from the North yesterday morning. The Native Minister has received no information respecting the action which Tavvhiao is reported to be taking against the Government for trespass in connection with the prospecting in the King Country. The Maori obstructions to road making at Kawhia is stopped, and the natives themselves are now assisting in clearing the scrub. It is the intention of the Government to push on the road, and it is hoped it will be completed to Alexandra before the winter sets in. Kawhia will be connected by telegraph when the road is completed. Mr Ballance will probably leave Wellington for the south on Friday nest on business connected with the Lands Department. His visit will extend over three weeks. The libel cases, Sinclair v, Henderson, Blenheim, have been withdrawn. A fire in Chapel street, Greymouth, yesterday morning destroyed the houses of J. O’Brien and Thos. Garth. The houses were insured for £IOO each, one in the South British and the other in an office unknown. Heavy rain fell yesterday morning at Dunedin, The case of Grubb v. the Napier Evening News, an action for libel, which was to have been tried on Monday, was settled by the defendants paying £2OO damages,
