WATER SUPPLY FOR GERALDINE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I was glad to see by Mr Tripp’s letter, in your issue of 16th, inst., that he has not lost sight of the scheme he propounded some time ago for awater-supply for this town, which, if carried out, would be of great benefit, and the suggestion of which entitles Mr Tripp to the thanks of the whole community. Ido not know what was the result of Saturday night’s meeting re the Fire Brigade, but it must be evident to the meanest capacity that a Fire Brigade would be of very little use without water; and the quantity ordinarily available would be a poor dependence in case of an extensive fire, so that some such scheme as this of Mr Tripp’s is a sine qua non. The principal functions of the Town Board hitherto have been squabbling with the Koad Board, harrying cattle off the streets (thereby conserving the bit of grass to find someone a few days’ wages to clear it away), tearing up the old good footpaths to lay them again with rough shingle (to the great detriment ot shoe-leather, but the consequent benefit of storekeepers), and then replacing the same with asphalt; an additional expense, providing a lamp here and there (just so many as serve to “ make darkness visible ”), and, in a general way, making the lives of the citizens a burden to them. But let the councillors now turn their attention to something really useful, and inaugurate a teraatic water-supply—and the pubbc will own that the Geraldine Town Board does not exist in vain.—l am, etc., Nemo. Geraldine, 18th .fan,, 1886.
