The debate on the vote of want of confidence, introduced by Sir John Robertson as an amendment to the Address-in-Reply, came to a close in the Legislative Assembly last night. A division was taken on the amendment, which was rejected by a majority of two only, Government securing 58 votes against 56. There was au unusually large House, only two members being absent.

The Union Company's Mararoa made a trial trip in the harbor to-day, in order to test her boilers, etc., preparatory to running to San Francisco. The result was mrst satisfactory. Colonel Roberts, of the New South Wales Permanent Forces, states he received a telepram only yesterday from Sir Peter Scratchley, dated from Cooktown. Sir Peter expressed himself hopeful of reaching Sydney by the Bth December, though at the time of writing he was in a precarious condition. In the Legislative Assembly to-day, the Premier, Mr Dibbs, ma le a Ministerial staf9ment. He announced the intention of the Government not to resign, and promised to bring down the Financial Statement before the Christmas recess.
