Mr H. C. Field, surveyor, of Wanganui, has addressed a letter to Dr Hector re the PohaDgainara reefs, in which he reports unfavorably of the prospects and doubtß whether any gold or silver will be found there. Dr Hector is also not sanguine as to any good results being obtained. Now that the Exhibition is being demolished it has been discovered ttiat the building had a narrow escape from destruction by fire. A gas heating stove had been used in the refreshment room, and no protection had been placed" between it and the wooden wall. On removing the stove it was found that a considerable portion of the dadoing was charred almost through, that part of the scrim above it had been burnt, and the dry lining boards scorched. The refreshment room is beneath the Fine Art Gallery, and had the fire broken out no doubt the fine collection of pictures would have been destroyed. Government have received information of a new find of gold in the Riverton district, but Ihe extent of the field is not yet known. Mr Gordon, the Inspector of Mines, who is travelling in the Lake Wakatipu district, has been asked by Government to report on the new discovery. The crushing at the Red Queen's mine, Mokihinui, Westport, of 458 tons of quartz, has produced 838 oz JBdwts of gold, valued at £3255. A dividend of 6d per share has been declared. At the first meeting of the Christchurch Hospital Board on Thursday, Mr R. JBeetham waa elected Chairman. An interproyincial draught match takes place in Christchurch on November 11th. The Canterbury team consists of Messrs Little, Boswell, Menztes, Hood, Craighead, McLaren, McAdam (2), Josling (2), Kay, Walker, and Reese, M.H.R. At a meeting of the Dunedin Hospital and Charitable Aid Board the Mayor was appointed Chairman. A motion was agreed to—" That it be an instruction to the Committee to enquire their relationship to the Kaitangata Relief Fund raised on the occasion of the disaster there." A contractor to the Dunedin Harbor Board was charged at the Police Court on Thursday with trespassing on Goat Island and damaging the same by firing a blast. The Magistrate expressed his opinion that ihe Minister of Lands had given his permission, but as he was not the proper party to give it, a fine of Is was inflicted. A long and rather persoual discussion took place on the Bill introduced in the Diocesan Synod, Dunedin, providing thaf the nomination of Ministers to the pari«li shall be exercised by the Bishop, with the advice and consent of the Standing Committee. The Bill was rejected by a vote of the clergy.
