TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka Town Board was held list night in the Board's offices. Present—Mes»rs K. F. Gray (Chairman), BrowD, and Mason. MINXJTESTba minutes of the last meeting read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward and inward correspondence was road and considered. Inwards it was as follows : From the Chaiiman of the Temuka Road Board, Mr Talbot, stating that the Sergeant of Police had requested him to draw the attention of the Board to the nuisance caused by the scavenger depositing nightsoil too near a public road and the township, and stating that he further \ increased the nuisance by burying it in a slovenly man Der. He trusted that the matter would receive immediate attention, that the public might be relieved of any suspicion that carelessness in this direction had been the cause of sickness.— | It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Mason » seconded by Mr Brown—" That it be left to the.Chairrnau to take the necessary steps to have the nightsoil deposited in such a manner as to abate the nuisance cornet plained of in Mr Talbot's letter of the 26th October." From Mr W. Badger, solicitor, Christchurch, stating that be was thinking of publishing a Local Government Guide and Ratepayers Manual if sufficient support were given him, and soliciting orders.—lt was decided to order one copy. overseer's report. The Overseer's report was read and considered aa follows : (i To the Chairman and Commissioners Temuka Town Board. " I have the honor to report that since last Board day the following works, as recommended, have been completed, with the exception of shingling with screened shingle footpaths in Main South road tho length of kerbing and channeling, and a few days' work to finish cleaning out water-channels, which I purpose finishing " this month, and which I think will not require doing again for some time to codie. —The two wells complained of by the Fire Brigade have been attended to. Both had to be daepaned—the one in Wood street 2ft, and the one in Railway Terrace over 3ft—and the old wooden frames taken out and bricked to the height of sfl. Both now answer very well, and there will be plenty of water if kept clean by pumping.—l have had Vine street drain deepened where fall could be got, and most of the low places filled up ; but 1 am afraid that it will always be a bother until pipes are laid down and the drain is covered in. Now the ditch is filled up with shingle, there are five crossings—and one aorosß Wood street—that will require to bo taken up

and pipes raising. This will take a few days more before it is finished. "The bnliincein the Bank last Board day was £l9O 16s SJ, and after paying September accounts omounting to £59 8s 3d, and allowing for moneys received and paid into the Bank for rent of reserves, rates, etc., amounting to £ll 7s 3d, there is a credit balance in Bank of £14215s sd. "As Inspector of Nuisances, I have to report that complaints have been made against the nightman not hurrying the nightsoi)' deep enough. Since then I have had all the old pits properly covered, and have instructed him to bury nightsoil deeper ; consequently it will be now covered about 2ft on top, which I thiDk will bo quite sufficient. 1 would also suggest that the plot of ground used for burying nightsoil should bo fenced, as it would prevent cattle and hows from I tramping over the dug pits, which 1 believe they are frequently in the habit of doing, and which is bound to create a nuisance. Of course, the fencing of the ground rests entirely with the Board and thn nightman.—l am, etc., "George Dyson." In reply to a question, the Clerk said he had no new work to recommend. There was was ody a little clearing up ' required. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £26 8s 9 1 were passed for payment, the Clerk was instructed to procure a stamp for the use of the Board, and the meeting terminated.
