GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The ordinary monthly mooting of this Board was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), J. Huffey, R. Taylor, Jtf. Dunlop, T. Farrell, and J. Muodell. Mr C. E. Sharratt, Clerk and Overseer, was in attendance. MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved, and inwards was read as follows : From the Maniger Gns Company, Timaru, in reference to the price of tar.— Resolved that the balance of the amount due for tar be paid. From Mr J. Jackson, offering te supply the Board with cement. From Mr W. Badger, offering the Board copies of his *' Local Government Guide and Ratepayers' Manual."—lt was resolved to procure a copy. From the Town Ranger, informing the Board that thirteen horses and two cows had been impounded during the past month. Mr ft. Taylor asked whether the Board could not inflict the fines for trespass without taking people into Court. The Court costs were heavier than the fines scmaUmes. The Chairman thought it would be quite legal to give persons the option of payingUhe. fines before the summonses were issued. The members agreeing that this would be a better course than the one at present pursued, it was resolved that the Clerk be authorised to inform persons whose stock is impounded that it is optional with them whether they.pay the fines or go to Court. PAINTING THE LAMP POSTS. Tenders for painting the lamp posts were received as follows :—H. R. Pratt £2 15s, and L. Newport £2 9s, the latter being accepted. overseer's report. The Overseer's report was: read is follows : "Since last meeting I have the honor to report that the surface men have been at work in every part of the district. The footbridge near Wliitaker's has been attended to, the footpaths in several streets have been raked, the water-tables generally have been seen after, and the big stones raked off the footpaths and broken on the dray traffic road. As instructed, the drain in Maslin's paddock haa been thoroughly cleaned out and widened where necessary, commencing in Mr Andrews' sestions, then in Meters Coltman's, Waters', Morrison and Danlop's, Fergusson's, T. Sherratt's and Dun lop's ; also the fords have beau lowered near DickeDs' and Mr Chesteiman's premises; ulao the traffic bridge near MrT. Sherratt'a has been so that I do not aatici

pate any complaints about this said drain for seme time to come.—Mr A. Coles has nearly oompleted tho drain in the Waihi river-bed opposite the cemetery corner, and so far has carried out the contract faithfully ; one of the crates is small, but there is a possibility of getting a large one inserted.—Mr Thomas Corkery, has nearly completed his contract on Wilson Btreet. The workmanship is not good by any means. I refer mainly to the fencing and trimming up the roadway when the ■toff has been taken from it to fill in over the culverts in the gullies. The concrete work is good, and I think will be quite large enough to take all the water. Notices have been sent to certain persons to clear the gorse off the streets in front of their premises. Since last meeting I ha?e received £2 10s from Mr Morrison for rent of Reserve 15, and have paid the same to the credit of the Board. As instructed I have to bring before you the matter of striking a rate or otherwise, and in connection with this question would suggest the advisability of calling a meeting of the ratepayers before a rate is ■truck. —I am, etc., "0. E. Sherratt, " Overseer to the Board." It was resolTed that the Works Committee meet and inspect the work done • by Corkery on Wilson street. - It was decided to let the striking of a rate stand over for a time. DAY LABOR. Mr Dunlop thought the time had arrived when they should dispense with some of their day labor. All the heavy work was now done, and he thought one man would be quite sufficient. Extra labor could be easily procured wheu required. The Board were spending their money too fast, and one of the first steps towards being economical would be to curtail their expenses. He would move —" That the services of only one surfaceman be retained." Mr Farrell seconded the motion. Mr Mundell thought they should have their Overseer's opinion on the matter. Mr Sherratt said that one man would not be able to do the work. He would be in faror of keeping two good men. Extra labor would always be required for laying down the asphalt, Mr Huffey moved as an amendment—- " That the services of two surface men be retained." Mr Mundell seconded the amendment, and in doing so said they ought to get the asphalting done. Mr Dunlop then withdrew his motion, but he thought they could get the asphalting done cheaper and better by contract than by day labor. The Chairman said that when tenders had been called for asphalting the Board declined them as they were considered to be too high. Mr Huffey's amendment was then made thfi standing motion, and on it being put it was carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £63 7s were passed for payment, and the Board resohed itself into a LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH. The Inspector of Nuisance's report was read, which showed that the sanitary state of the township was good. There was a probability of the College Board letting Reserve 696, when it was anticipated that the drains on it would be taken up, and the nuisance arising from them would be abated.—The sub-Committee appointed to choose a site for burying animals met, and recommended that T. S. 316 be set apart for this purpose. I am, etc., C. E. Sherratt, Inspector of Nuisances. It was resolved that the recommendation re site for burying dead animals be adopted. This being all the business, the Board adjourned.
