The Ashburton Agricultural Show opened on Friday, It was an immense success. There were some splendid exhibits and a large attendance. Pearce, a blacksmith at Newmarket, Auckland, claims the Derwentwater estate through bis wife, who is grand-daughter to the former claimant. Correspondence has passed between him and the English Chancellor of the Exchequer regarding the investigation of the claim . At the R.M. Court, Christchurch,) on Saturday morning, a man named Frederick Cooper, with four aliases, was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labor for a curious career of swindling. He was at one time waiter at the Clarendon Hotel, Christchurch, and afterwards he professed to be a doctor and obtained board and lodging at the Commercial Hotel for several days under the pretext. Ho then turned his attention to hotel lobbies, stealing overcoats and the like. He has, it appeared, recently finished a sentence of four years for forgery, Mr T. S.Weston and Judge Smith, the Law Examiners, have completed their September examinations.
